deleting or transfer?

I just opened up another blog called theshortroads.com. I used a domain I purchased. My thought was to transfer all the blog from the above, shortbredblog.wordpress.com to the new one theshortroads.com. I want to keep theshortroads.com domain as the name BUT keep the content and style of the shortbredblog.wordpress.com. Make sense? How do I do that and can I just transfer the name of the new blog to old one instead without losing the domain I purchased? Help…

When you have your own domain, it’s encouraged that you map it to your WordPress.com site. Doing so will route all traffic to your WordPress.com site address to the custom domain you have added.

Note that once you do this, all incoming traffic to your WordPress.com site links will get routed to the new custom domain address you have setup. This is an automatic process and there’s nothing you need to be worried about – you will lose no incoming traffic if you follow all the steps on that link.
Adding a custom domain will have no effect on your content and your WordPress.com site’s style.

Hi and thanks. My problem may be simpler. I opened a new site and used a domain name I want to transfer to another. I guess the question is will i permanently lose the domain name if I delete the blog I no longer want? I want to keep the domain name of the deleted blog.

To quote from this support article https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/, “Deleting a site permanently removes it and you’ll never be able to re-use its WordPress.com address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com)”
I am not sure what happens to the custom domain mapped. I am adding the modlook tag on this thread for the attention of a WordPress.com staff/WordPress.com Happiness Engineer. They should clarify this.

Hi thanks, but I resolved it. I copied and deleted the old one. Took awhile, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it any other way. This was the best way. Thanks! Appreciate all the input.

Noting for the sake of our volunteers: with domain mapping (domain registered elsewhere) as long as the new mapping upgrade will be on the same account, this will work fine.
For domain registrations, cancelling/deleting would not work because one would not be able to re-purchase the name. Same thing for mapping that needs to be moved to another account.
To move a domain to another account, a user would need to complete these steps:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-a-domain-to-another-wordpress-com-account/To move a mapping upgrade to another account, it’s best to just get in touch with staff and ask the user to confirm what they want.
And to move a domain to a different site on the same account, again, just flag us and have the user confirm their intentions.
