deleting page or move it?
-
I am afraid I started this site before I was supposed to, as I have registered with SiteGround and want to use their WordPress services. I’m not clear if I should delete the one I made on my own, or if it can be transferred over. I do not want to delete it if I will cancel out the ability to use my domain, etc. I’m afraid I’m over my head. Please advise.

Hi there,
If you’ve already worked on your website, there is no reason to delete it and start over. Instead, you can migrate it to your new host by exporting its contents and importing them.
Here’s how to export your WordPress.com site:

and here’s how to import them to your new site:

Thanks. The export was no problem, but to import it to SiteGround is says I have to update to a premium plan on WordPress. That doesn’t make sense to me, since I’m still using WordPress. I don’t understand much about this, but feel very frustrated. Can I just start over? Will I loose any of my domain rights, etc? I have tried to find a phone number to talk to someone. They made it look like customer service was their thing, but honestly, it has been impossible to speak to anyone. I also saw that they would migrate my site for free, but I can’t find anyplace that will allow me to even see that screen once I’ve given them my money.

Perhaps that is actually Siteground saying you need to pay them to build a site with them?
Your free site here at WordPress.com hasn’t even been launched yet. How much content have you created here in the last 3 weeks? Why not just start a fresh site at Siteground although I’m curious as to your reasons to prefer building a site over there when you could do most things right here for free. -
Thanks! I did already pay Siteground. I thought I was supposed to build the site at WordPress first, so I started doing that. I just want a basic website with a place to update news on my publishing journey and links to buy my book, etc. So maybe I didn’t even need that Siteground site. (I was taking advice that they would be a good hosting site.) So, if I already requested an “export” from my old site, is it still available if I try to just cancel the SiteGround plan?

Exporting your site does not affect your site in any way – it just makes a copy that you can use to import on another site.
WordPress.com is also a good hosting site – and the benefit of hosting here with us is that we take care of a lot of stuff for you like making sure your site is secure and you can just focus on creating your website content. You can read more about “.com” (which is us) and “.org” (which would be Siteground) here:
https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
If you purchased a domain name with them to use on your new site, you might need to keep that there until the 60-day hold on transfers expires – but you can update the domain nameservers to point to your WordPress.com site in the meantime.

To use a domain here you would need one of our paid plans. Also, in the next week or two, there will be other options than those currently shown on our plans page. Unfortunately, I can’t provide any more details than that, but keep an eye out on our blog for any upcoming announcements.
We’re here if you have any other questions!
