deleting previously uploaded file

  after creating a post in which i uploaded a (pdf) file i determined that i uploaded the wrong file. i then deleted the file and uploaded the correct one but the upload file name adds a sequential dash. e.g., original file was document.pdf and now the new file is document-1.pdf, etc. i have even deleted the post and all attachments, but when i create a new post i have the same problem, except now the filename is document-2.pdf. apparently, the documents are still on the server. i need to delete them because the original filename needs to be used.
