Deleting self-hosted websites

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

Over the years I’ve had a number of self-hosted WordPress websites. Some were mine; others were for friends. Some were set up for me to use; others for me to sell.

I have tried everything to remove some of them from my WordPress.com account but all I seem to be able to do is hide them from most screens. But I don’t want that – I want to delete them completely.

Some of these domains no longer exist, yet the sites are still listed here on WordPress.com.

Why do you guys make it so difficult to delete them?

How do I go about deleting them please?

    Thanks

To disconnect any wordpress.ORG site from your wordpress.COM account see here please – Disconnect Jepack sites https://en.support.wordpress.com/disconnect-jetpack-sites/

I don’t want to seem ungrateful after you took the time to reply, but I’m wondering if you actually read my question properly before hitting the reply button because it clearly states ‘self-hosted’ websites, which of course are completely different to the WordPress.org-hosted websites that you’re talking about.

If someone has the answer to the question that I asked, I would very much appreciate your response.

The “disconnection” that link refers to doesn’t seem to really mean “disconnection”, because while the site is no longer displayed in “My Sites”, as soon as you go to “Notifications”, there they all are.

So it seems “disconnect” means “kinda disconnect, but not really”. What I want is to completely and fully disconnect these sites from my account so that they do not display ANYWHERE. So that there is NO link between them and my account AT ALL.

    Is this possible?

Another way this issue manifests itself is if I open the WordPress app on iOS, and tap the ‘edit’ button to edit the sites that appear in my list.

I then get a list of every WordPress site I have ever created with a toggle beside it which controls the visibility of that website on my the app.

So the websites are clearly still linked to my account somewhere, and are simply hidden. Why is it so difficult to delete them in the proper sense of the word? Is this really too much to ask?

No sites that are not hosted by wordpress.COM can be connected to your worddpress.COM account without being connected to it through the Jetpack plugin.

    Disconnect Jepack sites https://en.support.wordpress.com/disconnect-jetpack-sites/

    Hi

That looks like the link you posted the first time, but like I said it doesn’t seem to actually disconnect the sites at all – it just seems to hide them from the “My Sites” page. Go to another page though, like “Notifications”, and they’re all back again. I do not consider this to be a disconnection – it’s merely smoke and mirrors.

How do I fully disconnect the site? And please don’t just post the same link again.

    Thanks

We do not provide support for any sites that are not hosted by wordpress.COM and we do not provide Jetpack support.

Note that Jetpack is a plugin used by WordPress.ORG bloggers to achieve parity with what we already have built into WordPress.COM blogs, and we do not provide Jetpack support on these wordpress.COM support forums. Please direct Jetpack issues to where they can get Jetpack support.

    re: Jetpack support
Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.me/support/

Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
    http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack

However, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

OK please stop replying. You’re not reading a word I say and you’re just posting the same useless nonsense. You’re polluting the thread.

I have “disconnected” the sites from WordPress.com but they are all still visible at https://wordpress.com/me/notifications.

Note this is WORDPRESS.COM and not Jetpack.

Please stop replying and let someone else help.

    Thanks

I read what you posted and because you think your issue is unique I already typed modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. I have “disconnected” the sites from WordPress.com but they are all still visible at https://wordpress.com/me/notifications.

Just to be sure that you didn’t forget to do it, I assume you immediately cleared your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache after disconnecting the sites from your wordpress.COM account, because if you did not then you would be viewing a cached copy of your notifications page.

  • Unknown's avatar

The page is not cached. It is being served this way from WordPress.com.

And like I’ve said twice above, they also show in the iOS app.

All I want to do is to delete them completely. Not half-delete, not delete from some pages but not all, but a full delete.

    Surely this is possible.

I’m sorry this thread became so long and that I was unable to help you. Staff have a backlog but they will eventually work their way forward to this thread and deal with your issue when they do. They work their way forward from the earliest dated threads to the most recent ones, as would be expected.

I will take a quick stab at this. What is the URL of your WordPress.com hosted site?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I appreciate the time. I’m sure your suggestions would have helped most people in this situation but I guess I have a slightly different issue here.

I’m also being a little grouchy after being frustrated by this interface which just seems to be sending me round and round in circles and lying to me saying that my sites are disconnected when they clearly are not. But of course I understand that’s not your fault.

So thank you for your input and hopefully someone with the power to properly delete these accounts will come along shortly thanks to your modlook tag. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, one of them would be http://www.assetoutlet.com. It’s no longer a WordPress blog and I no longer own the domain, and it is not showing under “My Sites”. But if I go to “Notifications”, among the huge list of every WordPress site I have ever created is “www.assetoutlet.com” and there seems to be no way to delete it.

  • Unknown's avatar

The “disconnection” that link refers to doesn’t seem to really mean “disconnection”, because while the site is no longer displayed in “My Sites”, as soon as you go to “Notifications”, there they all are.

I’m asking about the URL of the site you want to remove the unwanted sites from. When you say “in My Sites” and “Notifications”, what site are you in?

  • Unknown's avatar

And on the iOS app, if I click “Edit” on the top left to edit my list of sites, “Asset Outlet” appears with the toggle set to off. This means it is hidden when I click “Done”, but the point is it shouldn’t be there at all.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK so I managed to resolve the issue myself.

For anyone else who experiences the same issue, to save you from having to post on here and spend your time repeating yourself to people who clearly don’t read your messages before replying, what you need to do is this.

Go to “My Sites”. Notice that the sites in question are not displayed and appear to have been removed. This is actually not the case. Enter the site name in the search bar at the top and it will magically appear with a red X next to it. Click this X and you can actually, properly disconnect it from your account.

Search for all of the websites you thought were disconnected but are actually still showing in your Notifications area one by one and disconnect them in the same way.

Why on earth the sites are hidden until you search for them, I have no idea. It is really unintuitive. Hopefully this will help someone.
