Deleting site and account

  • Unknown's avatar

Unfortunately, after setting up my site, I realized this is not the type of service I need (I wanted to create a private blog for a single upcoming trip). I have not published the site yet, so I just need to close my account. Do I need to delete my site separately or will deleting my account take care of that issue? Thank you.

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi there, can you provide the URL of the site you want to delete? That will help us make sure you are getting the correct support. Thanks.

  • Hi there,

Currently I see only one site in your account, talithacumi.site.

That site is hosted at another provider, and built using the open source WordPress software made on WordPress.org. The site is linked to your WordPress.com account via the Jetpack plugin.

If you want to close down that site, you need to contact your hosting provider, Bluehost.com, to do that, as we have no control over the server your site is actually hosted on.

If you want to close down your WordPress.com username account, you can do that from the account settings page at https://wordpress.com/me/account. Note that this will also remove the Jetpack connection for your site, so if you want to continue using the Jetpack plugin’s features on your site, you shouldn’t do this.

If, perhaps, you want to migrate your Bluehost site to a free site here with us on WordPress.com (WordPress.com is the perfect place to host your site if you just want a private blog, and it’s completely free to do unless you want extras like your own custom domain), you can find details on importing any content you’ve already created on the current site here:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/import/

Alternatively you might also consider the journalling app, Day One, if you main goal is to keep a record of your trip that you don’t plan sharing with other people. It’s just another option besides using a website for this :)

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the suggestion and explanations, Kokkieh. Rather than importing my site content from BH to WP, I think I just want to shut the whole thing down and go with an online journal. So with that in mind, should I delete my BH account first, and then my WP account in order to ‘erase’ everything? Will that present any security or privacy issues for me or will closing these accounts remove the site and my personal info? Thanks.

  • Hi there, if you want the site gone entirely, then I’d recommend starting with Bluehost, as that is where the site is hosted.

If you cancel your hosting with them, the site will no longer exist online.

Next, if you’d like to delete your WordPress.com account, you can by following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/close-account/

With that said though, you’re also welcome to keep your WordPress.com account around of course, in case you want to start a simple site here and just tinker around with it. We do offer a free plan that’s free for life: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Please let us know if you have any more questions!
