deleting site vs clearing site
-
I wanted to delete all content from my site and start fresh. However, it appears that I deleted the site fully and no longer have access to the domain (a free account) and can’t make any changes. Going to the URL indicates that the authors have ‘deleted’ the site and it’s no longer available. Is there a way to get access to the domain back so I can start fresh? Thanks.

Sorry about that! Doing so does cause that domain name to be unusable. I’ll tag a staff member to see if it can be saved during any grace period. For future reference, check out this article on how to go about clearing out elements of your blog so you can have a fresh start. I hope that answers your question for you.

Hi nicoleyadon,

I’m afraid deleting a site is permanent and doing so means you will never be able to reuse the WordPress.com address. This is to prevent others claiming your WordPress.com address in the future.
The domain you are referring to is your default WordPress.com address: example.wordpress.com.
If you want to create a new site, you can do so with a new name, or variation of the name you were using before.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi gemmacevans –
Thanks for the information. I understand the safeguard of not allowing others to claim the WP address in the future, but it’s not clear to me why I can’t reclaim the site since I was the one who reserved the domain and created a site there in the first place? I’m not interested in creating a new site with a different domain. Moving forward, if I need to remove content, I know not to delete it thanks to your explanation. But I would like to get access to my domain again.
Thanks.

Hi,

I understand you would really like to get your site back but once a site is deleted, we really aren’t able to restore it — your site and it’s WordPress.com address are deleted. Because of this, we display warnings during the deletion process to help people understand that deleting a site is permanent:
But I would like to get access to my domain again.
You don’t have any purchases on your account, so I think the ‘domain’ you are referring to is your WordPress.com address: nicoleyadon.wordpress.com. This is tied to the site that was deleted.
Moving forward, if I need to remove content, I know not to delete it thanks to your explanation.
If you do change your mind and decide to create a new site at some point in the future, you’re welcome to post here for help.
