Deleting sites off wordpress

If I delete all my wordpress sites (that have already been ‘permanently’ deleted through self-hosting provider so there is no admin for the sites anymore), but the sites still show up on wordpress under the sites tab (the domains are registered somewhere else), will I be able to use the same domain names in the future (after 30 days( if I choose to use wordpress again once all the sites have been deleted from wordpress permanently?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

None of those sites are hosted here on WordPress.com, but are connected to your account via the Jetpack plugin. Therefore, as long as you still have the domains registered and the sites active with your host, you can always reconnect them back to your account in the future. However, neither the sites nor the domains are hosted with us, so I’d make sure that they are still up and running with your host.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you. I want to delete the sites/blogs on WordPress and have already cancelled the host they were hosted with (which all sites have been deleted on that end and domain names have separate registrar from host). There is no admin to disconnect the Jetpack plugin now. I want to delete the “blogs” off of WordPress and disconnect Jetpack altogether, how do I do this? what does the “delete site permanently” option do in this case? Since neither the sites nor the domains are hosted/registered through WordPress, after permanent deletion of sites via WordPress delete sites option will I be able to come back in the future (after 30 days of deletion) to restart the “blog” with same site names/domains as they are now? Or does none of the WordPress deletion and “no reuse of site name” apply to this situation since the sites/domains are not hosted/registered through WordPress?

to clarify, if I choose a new host and want to restart after “deleting sites permanently” on WordPress itself, will I be able to come back in the future after 30 days to restart the “blogs” and use the same site name as they are now?

  • what does the “delete site permanently” option do in this case?

The 30-day deletion of blogs policy doesn’t apply to Jetpack-connected sites on WordPress.com since the sites are not hosted here. The only thing that will be “deleted” is the Jetpack connection which connects your self-hosted site to your WordPress.com account.

To confirm, are you referring to the actual domain names, not the site content?

If you’re wanting to use your domain at a different host, you should never cancel it at your current host – once you decide to cancel your domain, there is no guarantee that you will be able to reacquire it in the future. Someone else could gain access to it. Also, it usually takes a few weeks for your domain registration to clear and become available once you cancel it. There isn’t an exact time, however, so you’ll be checking consistently to see when it becomes available.

If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to WordPress.com

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

If you recently registered the domain, you have to wait 60 days before you are able to transfer your domain to a different host, but in the meantime, you can use the domain with your site by pointing the nameservers over to your new host:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/connect-existing-domain/

I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore the domain back to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back.

Let me know if you would like for me to try and regain the domain for you.

I want to delete the “blogs” off of WordPress and disconnect Jetpack altogether, how do I do this?

Our support page provides a guide on how to remove self-hosted WordPress site from your WordPress.com account:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/disconnect-jetpack-sites/

If you have any questions or trouble with the disconnection, let me know, and I’d be happy to assist. You can provide the URL of the sites you want to disconnect, and I can do them for you on our end.

    Thanks!
