Deleting '>>' symbol
-
I’m building a wordpress.com blog using the Black-Letterhead theme and I’m doing some CSS edits because I want to simplify the design and change some colours & fonts.
I would like to delete the ‘>>’ symbols next to the blogroll, catagories and archives entries. I’d like my lists of links justified on the left with their headings, without any bullet points or ‘>>’ arrows.
Is it possible to delete these ‘>>’ on a wordpress.com site? I’ve seen some discussion about this but it was inconclusive.
Can this sort of editing only be done if my site is a wordpress.org site hosted separately? Thanks.
My site under construction:

This is no longer “inconclusive” Theme Staff have confirmed that the links to the web designer of the theme and the link to blog at wordpress.com are not to be hidden or removed and we Volunteers are supposed to report any sites we see where CSS editing has been used to do that. See here >
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/changes-to-blog-footer?replies=5#post-556778There is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support so you will gave to be patient while waiting for help. Be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/

Removal of footer links is between you and the theme designer on a wordpress.org install. Many designers do require that their links be left intact on themes they have donated free of charge. If you purchase a theme then in most cases the links can be removed.

Hi timethief- thanks for your reply.
I’m not sure why you mention the removal of footer links, links to the theme designer etc. I don’t want to remove any of those.
My query is only how to remove the actual double-arrow symbols “>>” that are used as bullet point devices in the sidebar.

It’s been a long time since I messed with Black Letterhead. This is where the symbol is defined.
#sidebar ul ul li:before { content: "» "; }To get rid of it entirely, you need to do this.
#sidebar ul ul li:before { content: none !important; } -
If you do not see it, then just add it and use the !important attribute, otherwise it will not work.
Never paste the entire stylesheet into the CSS edit window as it will only cause you pain and grief. Put only the specific selectors and the specific declarations you are changing into the editor window, and then make sure that “add to existing…” is checked.

I just set up my test blog with black letterhead, entered the above code I gave you, and the >> is gone.
Were you using the “preview” function? If so, sometimes you have to force refresh the preview page to see the actual changes. Here is my test blog without the >>

I think we may be at cross-purposes…
I can still see the “>>” arrows on your test blog.
The arrows I’m referring to (that I’d like to remove) are (on your test blog) the little grey “>>” double arrows that point to the links in your sidebar.
ie. the grey arrows that point at “About”, “Contact me”, “Archives”, “Blog” etc.
When I view your blog in Safari and Firefox I still see those arrows.

What is going on here. For me they were gone in Firefox and in Safari. Now they are back.
This is the digital equivalent of duct tape, but give it a try and see what it does for you. It works in FF and Safari for me. Remove the >> character and just put one single space in between the quote marks.
#sidebar ul ul li:before { content:" "; }
