Deletion of profiles

From what I can gather it is not possible to delete one’s account. Is this true? If so I find it rather unusual and certainly uncommon practise (if not outright baffling from a privacy perspective).

It seems the suggested solution is to remove personal information, which is fine as far as it goes, but given the trail of posts one invariably has this is easily undermined. For instance, it seems that old blog posts still come under one’s old name meaning that even an account stripped of info will still point to a person’ information.

Surely there must be some option around this? If not, is there a reason why wordpress is so adamant about non-deletion?

It’s of paramount importance that those posting on the internet are wide awake to the fact that pseudonymous posting is not anonymous posting. We all leave digital breadcrumbs trails and some of use are even paid to track others, which is usually as easy as pie to do because people cannot resist shooting their mouths off. Those who think they can say all kinds of stuff online and then delete a blog and/or blog content and/or account information and have their trail magically and instantly wiped clean are ill informed. Morever, we have no control over what search engines choose to display and how long they choose to display it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Deleting blogs and/or blog content does not remove any indexed items from the SERPs (search engine page results). Google and Bing only clear their caches of deleted indexed content that produces a 404 (page not found) every 3 – 6 months.

That being said WordPress.com has an excellent policy re: no recycling of deleted blog URLs and no username account deletions which protects the innocent. http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

Note that you were not required to provide a single byte of personal information to register a username account here at WordPress.com. Any you did provide was voluntarily provided and can be removed here > Dashboard > Users > My Profile
    About you

All you were required to provide to register an account was an email address and it can be replaced at any time.

Although username accounts are not deleted, so you cannot be impersonated and have your reputation affected by anyone registering the same username in the future, there are steps you can take that amount to removing all personal information and result in leaving only a throwaway email address behind. http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

    1. You can go to My Account->Edit Profile and remove all data except the account name and an email address. Create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address. This only leaves the username behind.

    2. To unsubscribe from email sent to you from WordPress.com, go here and click on “Block all subscription emails from WordPress.com”:
    http://wordpress.com/#!/following/subsettings/

    3. To ensure the account is locked up tightly, visit this site, generate a password of 15-20 characters, and change the account password to it:
