Deluged by e-mails

  • Unknown's avatar

I could really use some help on this one, fast!

A few weeks ago something changed either with WordPress.com or Newsbud.com.

I used to receive notifications from WordPress when someone replied to posts I was following at Newsbud.

Now I receive notifications whenever Newsbud post new news articles (dozens of times a day!).

How can I tell WordPress to stop these latest notifications?
I can’t see ANY way to do this!

How did this come to be?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t need help with that blog above. WordPress added that not me!

  • Hi there,

At what email address are you receiving these emails? The email address appearing in your account settings is not subscribed to newsbud.com, and we haven’t recently sent any emails to that address. You can find your account settings here:

    https://wordpress.com/me/account/

And can you please confirm whether the new post notification are coming from an @wordpress.com email address or a different address? It’s possible the owner of that site manually subscribed you to a news letter service they’re using without your knowledge. If that’s the case we won’t be able to do anything as we can only control WordPress.com subscriptions.

    Thanks for replying kokkieh.
I am now hopeful that we can quickly resolve this issue.

Let me begin by answering your questions in reverse order.
The new post notifications are coming from (email visible only to moderators and staff).

I am receiving the emails to another email address. Not the one you see for this account.

I am not prepared to reveal my private email address publicly on this forum. I’m sure you can understand that.

I am looking for a solution that _any user can apply to address this situation.

Surely I am not the only one who has/had this problem?

I am hoping you will say “Sure here’s what you do to fix the problem.
Go here to this website, click on this, do that etc. and your problem will be fixed.”

Surely, you don’t wait until each user complains individually, and then manually fix the problem at your end? That would be extremely time-consuming.

BTW, how does a user quickly find their posts in this forum?
There are 1000’s to browse through.

    TIA

OK this is getting really nasty, really quickly.

I tried to unsubscribe to the site in question. I had clicked on the link sent in a WordPress e-mail to me.

So I decided to log into WordPress to unsubscribe.
    I couldn’t!!!!

WordPress would not let me log in!!!!

WordPress will use my e-mail address to send notifications but won’t let me use my e-mail address to log in!!

And get this, when I use the same e-mail in question, to reset the password,
guess what happens? It doesn’t work. I get the following message:

    “Unable to reset password

I’m sorry, but we weren’t able to find a user with that login information.
    What should I do now?

    Double-check your spelling.
Trying entering another email address you can access into the password reset form.
Confirm you have a WordPress.com account and not WordPress.org.
Check your WordPress.com registration email for the correct login.
Did you change your registered email address? Use the new address.

    Help!

Still having problems? Try our account recovery form and we’ll do our best to get you running again.”

I can only sign in with my first WordPress account!!

  • I am not prepared to reveal my private email address publicly on this forum. I’m sure you can understand that.

If you type the email address here it is automatically hidden from everyone but staff members like me.

I am looking for a solution that _any user can apply to address this situation.

Log out of your WordPress.com account, clear your browser cookies, and click the Unsubscribe link in the email, or visit https://subscribe.wordpress.com.

You need to log out first, as clicking those links while logged in will only take you to the subscription options for this account.

Detailed instructions on how following via email works on WordPress.com are available here:

    Following Blogs

WordPress will use my e-mail address to send notifications but won’t let me use my e-mail address to log in!!

If you signed up for notifications using an email address not connected to a WordPress.com account, there is no account to log into. It’s not required to be logged into WordPress.com or even to own an account to follow a site directly via email. If this is the case with the email address where you’re receiving the notifications, you won’t be able to log into the account, as the account doesn’t exist.

If you provide the email address to me I can check on that. Write the email address on its own line and it won’t be visible to other forum users.

BTW, how does a user quickly find their posts in this forum?
There are 1000’s to browse through.

Click on your username that appears at the top of the support forums, or click on the word “Member” that appears under your username on each post you’ve made. That will take you to your forum profile:

My e-mail address is (email visible only to moderators and staff)

I logged out of WordPress and cleared cache/cookies.

I signed up for notifications using an email address that IS connected to a WordPress.com. The address above.

Here’s the thing. I will be as brief yet detailed as possible.

Prior to a few weeks ago, I was able to subscribe to threads at Newsbud.com.
After I subscribed I would receive a confirmation notice from WordPress.

After I confirmed, I would receive notices ONLY when new POSTS were made on the thread.

Now I am getting deluged by e-mails sent by WordPress notifying me that new NEWS ARTICLES have been posted!!!

I never subscribed to WordPress to notify me of new NEWS ARTICLES!
Wordpress never used to do that before.

    Something has changed.
    Do you know what?
Can you tell me what to do to stop it?

For the meantime I have unsubscribed TOTALLY from Newsbud.

  • That email address isn’t connected to a WordPress.com account. Your mark21412 username account has a completely different email address.

That email address is subscribed to newsbud.com, and is subscribed to receive instant notifications of new comments on several post. I also see a pending subscription for the same site.

It could be that someone who knows your email address is signing you up against your will. We cannot prevent that, but you can block all email subscriptions to that address completely.

I do suggest you immediately change your password for that email address – whoever is signing you up for notifications to that site is also approving them, and they can only do that if they have access to your email account.

I’ve sent an email to that address with a link to access the subscription settings.

    Thanks kokkieh for helping out!

I know this should be simple but it’s not.
    It is actually quite complicated.

I would like to get to the root cause and fix the problem.
And I hope you will help me achieve that, as quickly as possible.

I logged out of this account and cleared cache and cookies.
I then clicked on a link that was sent to my (email visible only to moderators and staff) address.

This is what I saw when I got to the link site:

“Log in to your WordPress.com account to more easily manage your subscriptions. Don’t have an account? Create one here.

This is the management page for following blogs. You will receive an email at (email visible only to moderators and staff) whenever a new post is made on these sites. Unfollow a blog to stop receiving emails from that blog. Go to Settings to stop receiving all emails from WordPress.com.

You are not actively following any blogs.

If you are expecting to see blogs that you are following here please check that you used the same email address and that they are not still pending. “

I then clicked on tabs at the top:
    Comments (52) and Pending (23)

Despite your saying that my (email visible only to moderators and staff) address is not registered with WordPress, I used to received notices for subscribed comments regularly to this address.

PLEASE help me straighten this out once and for all!

I have never received any notice about any Newsbud thread/comment/news article to my (email visible only to moderators and staff) e-mail.

    Thank you!

  • You are not actively following any blogs.

You aren’t following any blogs via that email address, you’re following individual posts on a blog.

I then clicked on tabs at the top:
    Comments (52) and Pending (23)

And then what did you do? Did you click the Unsubscribe link appearing next to each post? It doesn’t look like you did.

Those comments and Pending items are what you’re subscribed to. If you click on Comments, you can unsubscribe from all the posts appearing there, and you can block all email notifications via the Settings tab, but you need to actually click the option presented there. If you don’t make any changes, nothing will change.

You don’t need a WordPress.com account at an address to receive email notification at that address. You can sign up for notifications on a site without having any WordPress.com username connected to that address.
