DePo Masthead–would like one column of content to be fixed

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like the left column of content on my blog to remain fixed, i.e. even as I upload new articles to the second and third columns, and even as the content in those articles is regularly refreshed, I would like the information in the left column not to move. Is this possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you tried making that post that you want to always be on the left column a sticky post? I’m not sure how that works with depo masthead.

Hey that works! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help.

You are welcome. I wasn’t entirely sure how depo masthead handled sticky posts, so thanks for posting back here that it works.

    Hi Sacred Path,

You were so helpful last time…I wondered if I could trouble you with two more questions?

    1) Is it possible to remove “RSS Feed” from the menu in depo masthead? I’m not sure that it is something that I want to have on the same level as the other pages, but I can’t figure out how to put it elsewhere…

    2) Re. site stats: I know that WP says “we don’t count your own visits to your site”…but when I am *not* logged in as Work Stew, am I still recognized as me…or do those visits count as non-me views?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on these issues!

    1. I just took a look at the CSS, and I don’t see any way to delete the RSS feed link from the top navigation.

    2. When logged OUT is a funny thing. Staff have said that your visits might or might not be counted, but what I’ve seen is if you are logged out they definitely are counted.

Thank you very much for answering both my questions. You are so knowledgable, and I really appreciate your sharing what you’ve learned…thanks again!

Sacred Path, you’ve been so helpful in the past…I wonder if I could trouble you again?

Today, with no changes (I believe) on my part, there are two strange things happening on my site:

    1. There is now a red line under the title Welcome in the left column. That wasn’t there before and I don’t want it there…any idea why it would have appeared suddenly?

    2. When you click on the FAQ page and a few others, the content is no longer centered in the browser…it’s way over to the side. Again, it wasn’t like this before…any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,
    Kate

  • Hi workstew,

    1. The red line denotes posts that are “sticky” — see http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/.

    2. That was a layout bug; it’s fixed now.

Hi Lance, thanks so much for your response–very helpful!

Just one question: is the line indicating stickiness a new thing as of today? Just curious as that post’s been sticky for quite a few weeks and I hadn’t seen the red line until today…

    Thanks very much,
    Kate

  • Yes, it is a new update in the last day or two.

By the way, who are you wonderful people (e.g. lance and sacred path) and how do you know all these things???

Are you humble WordPress users like myself (who just happen to know way more than I do)…or do you have some official involvement with WordPress themes? No need to answer if you’d rather remain the mysterious superheroes that you currently are to me–but I am very curious!

Thanks again for all your help,
    Kate

Hello Lance and Sacred Path (and all other knowing users) !

I’m new on WordPress, and I would also like to use the Theme “depo masthead”. It is indicated that this theme can be used as a one-column, but I don’t find what I should change in the dashboard to have only 1 appaaring column.

Could you please help me ?

    Thank you !

    Emma

    @Emma
I believe that is an error that Staff ought to remove from the theme description. Beacsue there is not automatic setting under “Theme Options” to create a single column layout.

The only way that can be done is by purchasing a CSS upgrade. If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/editing-css/

If you do purchase the upgrade be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/

  • Hi, emmaaime. Depo Masthead automatically shows your content in one column on posts and pages. That’s the cause for the tag in the theme description.

  • @workstew Lance (and I, and anyone else with a gray border around their forum details) is part of the WordPress.com staff. thesacredpath is a community member just like yourself who — like a lot of the other really great regulars on the forums — happens to know tons of very helpful info about WordPress that they love to share.
