description categories migration
-
I migrated a huge website using xml to wordpress.com. Now, I discover that the thousands of descriptions of tags and categories do not appear in the new site. How is this possible?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I see that some time after you made this forums post you were able to locate the priority support contact (email) provided under your WordPress.com Business Plan.
To avoid any confusion I am going to close this post as a duplicate, but if you need any further help you can find priority support again here anytime you need assistance: https://wordpress.com/help/contact/

Thanks for your reply. No, I asked another question, more private.
I still don´t understand how thousands of descriptions of tags and categories do not appear in the new site. How is this possible?
It is a matter of urgence for me. If this is always the case (deleting descriptions), then I have to take some decisions now.

If you need help urgently, using the priority support channels such as chat and email will get you assistance faster than posting in the free support forums. You can use the same email to ask for help if you have other questions.
I still don´t understand how thousands of descriptions of tags and categories do not appear in the new site. How is this possible?
Could you please provide us with the link to the post or page where you expected to see categories but don’t see them and which ones are missing? With that information, we will be able to give you better advice.
Thank you!

Hi, I asked, I give the links, I sent 3 emails explaining why the reasoning I received was not logical, in my opinion, and I did not receive any feedback from the last days. Is it better to post here the problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Your Business plan gives you access to email support as well as 24/7 live chat assistance. You can access priority support at https://wordpress.com/help/contact/
Our email replies provided steps on installing and activating a specific plugin and what to do once the plugin is activated. There doesn’t appear to be confirmation that those steps were tried. If they were and you’re still having trouble, please reach out to priority support at the link above.

Thanks, but by email or chat I have to explain everything every time. Here we can follow the conversation, and I really believe that other people can benefit with the problems I have migrating a site using xml from wordpress.org to wordpress.com.
Your team told me later that your Jetpack Import All feature only works for transferring single WordPress sites. And recommend the All-in-One WP Migration multisite extension.
Several comments on this:
1- “Jetpack Import All feature only works for transferring single WordPress sites”: This does not appear in your documentation. I have said it several times. Many more people may feel sad by a limitation that they discover after signing up for the business plan.
2- The “the All-in-One WP Migration multisite extension”: I already contacted them, they told me that it probably wouldn’t work (because I have the original server shared and don´t give me access to its code), that I could try and buy their expensive plugin, and that they wouldn’t refund me if it didn’t work, which would be probable scenery.
3- The problem is that, meanwhile, time went by, and as I didn’t pay attention to the descriptions (if the comments and tags were exported, I assumed that the descriptions were also exported), and it’s only now that I realised that the content is no longer on the original hosting. In short, if I had had the information that jetpack had key limitations for importing, and that xml did not export and import descriptions in normal situations (when you have more than 1.000 posts), I would have made another decision, like staying on the original hosting. But none of this was in the wordpress.com documentation.
-
Sorry, not “and it’s only now that I realised that the content is no longer on the original hosting.”, but “and it’s only now that I realised that the descriptions were not migrated. My content is no longer on the original hosting.”

I’m checking on the import of category descriptions to see if the export/import is set up to bring those along, but in the meantime, can you contact your previous host and see if there is anyway they could restore the site for perhaps a few days so that you could do a full migration export via one of the migration plugins?
-
Thanks. The IT guy who used to manage my website, along with other clients (all together under the same account/reseller account) got angry about my decision to migrate to wordpress.com, and he doesn’t want to collaborate in anything. And as the account with the hosting provider, from which he managed all his clients, is only with him, I can’t ask for restoring the site directly either.
I have only a group of category descriptions. I do care of the thousands of tag descriptions, not category descriptions, I had.

One point I would like to see if we can get your help clarifying is, and, my apologies if I have missed this somewhere, do you have access to the original site? Meaning, if we were to recommend a new plugin such as this one to help you migrate the site to WordPress.com, would you be able to install that plugin where the site is hosted now and give it a try? Thanks so much for taking the time to clarify this for us.
-
Thanks, very kindly.
As jetpack establishes the xml migration as default, I review the 59 xml files to be sure were all ok. Reassured of that, I thought that the xml files were my backup and now there are not access to the original cite.

Good Morning –
I can appreciate that you like having this discussion in the forums where everything is threaded together. That makes sense. It will hopefully help somebody else in the future as well.
After reading through this conversation a couple times I’m left with the following impression about where we are at, and what our next steps are.
- You need to import your site on to WordPress.com, but don’t have access to the files or back up to make that happen.
Do you have access to the original site? What did the hosting provider suggest when you contacted them about this? Are they willing to restore the site for a few days so you can get this moved?
Looking at leyderecho.org there is still a large amount of content published there. Let’s take this one piece at a time.
-
Thanks. I migrated most of the content, but the descriptions of (thousands of) the tags are not there.
I am not able to restore the site. It is more than 1 month and the content -according to the person in charge- is not more in the old server.

Hello, and thanks for your response.
I noticed you have the WordPress Importer plugin installed on your site. I’d like to clarify if you used the WordPress Importer plugin to import the site or if you used our Import Everything solution:
https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site/If you still had access to the site, we would recommend turning off WordPress Importer and the Custom Post Type UI plugin before trying another import. But it sounds like the provider says it cannot be restored temporarily.
Also, did you originally add the description tags for a custom post type, maybe created with the Custom Post Type UI plugin?
Thanks for your patience while we look into this issue.
-
I relied 100% on your Import Everything solution, but didn´t work.
Only later I knew that it didnt work with multisites. Which surprise me, since most of the sites in wordpress.com (the free ones) are in a multisite.
No, I have not access to the older server.
-
Hi there,
I understand you don’t have access to the previous site anymore. Would you happen to remember if the description of the categories and tags were added using the Custom Post Type UI plugin?
-

Thanks for confirming. I wanted to return back to this statement you made earlier if that is OK:
As jetpack establishes the xml migration as default, I review the 59 xml files to be sure were all ok. Reassured of that, I thought that the xml files were my backup and now there are not access to the original cite.
To clarify, do you have XML files downloaded from your previous site? Because the site itself is online, and the tag descriptions were not included in the migration, there is not a lot we can do on our end to recover this data.
However, if you have XML files of the site, if the tag description was entered natively (and not using some other dependency such as a plugin your designer installed on the network level) they should be present in the data. With this in mind I’d like for you to try importing this XML content into your site. The way the WordPress importer works it will skip any content that is existing but will add any content it does not see is already on the site. This may allow it to import the tag description info.
I would also recommend temporarily disabling any plugins you’ve added to make sure they do not interfere with the import. Thanks! -
Thanks.
I have have XML files of the site, the tag description was entered natively, but they are not in the data.
For example, only appear:

Guía de Administración Pública

At least, reviewing 2 of the files. If you think all the descriptions will be in only one file, then I will need to check all the 59 files.
