Nothing. In wp.com blogs you can only use one of the themes available under Appearance>Themes.

is it that difficult to make your own ?

    Or everything.

A good workman does not blame his tools.

Not able to alter the theme (as in the “tools” in my quote above)????????

Then a “gr8” designer would use the materials and tools available to him, to make a great design, or even more apt, an intriguing site with articles that people would want to read.

That said, you could buy the CSS upgrade and make design changes. I’m thinking that you would need to learn some “technology” first, if you want to do that, though.

    Custom CSS

Also note that you cannot chance the underlying functions of any theme available to wp.com users. You can change only the appearance of your blog with the CSS upgrade.

It is not a matter of difficult or not here. All themes used here first have to be reviewed and modified to get rid of security issues and to make things work with the modified to work within the confines of the multi-user version of wordpress that is used here. That is why you are not allowed to upload or create your own theme here.

What you can do is use the paid CSS upgrade to modify the look of the themes that are listed under appearance > themes, but you cannot change functionality. That would require access to the underlying PHP script theme files and we do not have access to those because again this is a multi-user platform and we all share the same files. A change to one of those files means it would change it for everyone using that theme.

Virtually all themes written for wordpress (here or otherwise) are written in PHP script. There is no HTML.

We cannot upload or use our own themes or themes we download off of the internet here at wordpress.COM.

If you want to go self-hosted with your blog, and pay to host it on a third-party hosting service then you can do pretty much anything you want.

At this free hosting service, wordpress.COM, there are restrictions on what we can and cannot do. This is one of those restrictions.
