  I’d like to design my site before transferring the domain or having it pointed to my hosting.

  Go ahead and register your free site. Just click My Sites – Domains – Add.

  You can hide it from public by adjusting the privacy settings until you’re ready to connect the domain as well. Here’s how you do that:

  Last thing, there are 2 ways to use your domain on WordPress.com.
