design site before getting domain name

Can I design a site with wordpress, and customize it, before I get a domain name. What I want to do is 1st: design the the site, 2nd: transfer my domain name, 3rd: upgrade to personal hosting. Checking because I tried another site and there customization of design was very limited. and very useless.

Hi, no problem. You’re welcome to create your new site with us before pointing the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready.
I do recommend getting a plan earlier on if you’ll need it, since they have other features you might find useful, including direct support:

How do I select a theme to get started? I can’t get by the select domain screen to even select themes.

You have two options:
1. You can enter the domain you intend to use on that step and continue from there. (you won’t have to actually finish mapping or transferring to domain until you’re ready, you’ll be given a free subdomain to build your site under until then)
2. Start over with a free site, you can upgrade it at any time.
