Design Your Own Theme
-
A couple of questions I’m hoping someone can help answer:
After a couple of years with the existing theme, I’d like to change it, so I’m thinking about using the “Design Your Own Theme” facility, but it will undoubtedly take some time to get it looking the way I want it.
So firstly, can I retain and continue using my existing theme, while working on the new one – and is it just a case of activating it when ready?
Secondly, my plan is the “Starter plan”, which at the time I chnaged from a free site seemed sufficient, however I get messages on my dashboard saying “Your site includes premium styles that are only visible to visitors after upgrading to the Explorer plan or higher”, although I’ve never quite figured out what styles are referred to, since my site looks okay on other computers.
So please, can anyone advise what those styles are; I’d particularly like to continue using a Splash screen similar to the existing one – and will it be necessary to upgrade to the “Explorer Plan”. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks: George

In order to get access to all the style options, you must upgrade to the explorer plan at $8 per month.

Yes, you can absolutely work on designing a new theme without disrupting your current live site. Consider using a staging environment or the theme customizer for live previews. When you’re satisfied with the design, you can activate the new theme.
