designing my theme
-
I have worked with a graphics designer and she provided me with a background for my website. I am making a website and not a blog. I am having trouble designing my site and getting everything to match up. If I choose to not pick a theme how do I do that or can I do that? If I don’t have a theme am I still able to have tabs or different pages on my website? I need help! Please email at (email visible only to moderators and staff)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
If I choose to not pick a theme how do I do that or can I do that?
That’s not possible. WordPress.com is a turn key operation. We don’t do “designing” here as we cannot access and edit the underlying HTML and PHP. We can do some “styling” via CSS editing only.
You cannot upload any third party themes into a WordPress.COM hosted blog so be clear on that. The only themes we can use on WordPress.com blogs like your blog are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.Relevant support docs:

I am making a website and not a blog.
Every day we get new people who do not understand that a blog is a website posting here. This is all semantics and blog structure.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/ and http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
Read this comparison carefully please http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

You cannot do that.
Nobody will email you. Answers go in the forum so that in future other people can read them and learn from them.
Customization at the “design my own theme” level is not possible here. With the Custom Design upgrade you can do a lot to alter the look of existing themes, but you must always start with an existing theme and then edit the CSS of that theme to adapt it.
Many of our prefab themes allow you to upload background images even without the Custom Design upgrade.

I would update this just a little to say that it’s true you must always start with an existing theme, but there is an option for CSS experts that will let them turn off the theme CSS completely, which effectively turns any theme into a blank slate. I definitely would not recommend that option for a beginner though. :)
If I choose to not pick a theme how do I do that or can I do that?
You must choose a theme. To turn off the CSS for a theme go to Appearance > Customize > CSS panel and click the option that says, “Don’t use the theme’s original CSS.” Please note that this is an advanced option for CSS experts.
If I don’t have a theme am I still able to have tabs or different pages on my website?
You have to pick a theme, so tabs will be part of the design you create with CSS and you can absolutely have different pages.
While it’s possible to turn any theme at WordPress.com into a blank slate and start fresh with CSS, doing that is quite a large undertaking. If you have a design and would like to have that applied to a website, it’s possible someone very skilled could do it here at WordPress.com but someone like that may also direct you to setup a WordPress.org install in order to get more control over the code—a WordPress.org setup is something you manage on your own separately from WordPress.com where the themes, plugins, and hosting is all taken care of for you.
I would recommend trying to find a reputable web developer to translate your design into code for you and ask them their advice about where to host it. It sounds like that will be the best route for you!

The videos are for WordPress.ORG installs. They do NOT apply to WordPress.COM blogs. See here for the CSS editing solution https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-remove-search-box-from-twenty-eleven-menu-bar-1?replies=4#post-1377259

I need more information then that…I need a step by step i am new to the cite and really don’t understand how to remove the search box

1) you do a search of the CSS forum for “remove search box” and see if any of the questions and answers apply to your theme. If so, just follow those instructions.
2) if not, then you make a new post in the CSS forum stating the name of your theme and that you would like to make the following specific change: delete the search box.

@raincvaoster
I already linked to the exact instructions for doing that which were provided by designsimply above right here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-remove-search-box-from-twenty-eleven-menu-bar-1?replies=4#post-1377259 -
raincvaoster was, of course meant to be raincoaster (I removed the Chihuahua from my lap so I can type without interference.)

This is the CSS editing forum and we assumed you did have the rquired upgrade. You will require a Premium theme upgrade bundle purchase in order to get the ability to edit the CSS as indicated here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-remove-search-box-from-twenty-eleven-menu-bar-1?replies=4#post-1377259
For new accounts that do not have existing individual upgrades being renewed, going forward from September 1st, 2014 the custom design upgrade is bundled into Premium and Business single plans that users can pay for annually.

Yes.
Without the Custom Design/CSS upgrade, you cannot edit your theme.
Why don’t you start with just http://learn.wordpress.com and go from there. Theme editing is actually an advanced thing. Get the basics first.

CSS is a stylesheet language made for applying styles to a website.
You can use it to make minor adjustments without too much trouble if you learn a little about how to write the code. This tutorial is one that I think is really good if you are new to it and interested in learning how to write CSS code:
