Designing WP theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I ma currently working on the design of my own WordPress theme. When I check the current trend in theme designing, I notice that most blogs alocate a space for ads. I’m thinking of purchasing unlimited space in top of owning my own domain name. Is it required to host ads or one can do without it?

Moreover, I notice that most blogs have sidebars all over the place. Do you think a design with an effective bottom bar can make up for it because I’m not a big fan of sidebars and the space is limited on my design.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We cannot add themes at wordpress.COM, we are limited to the themes found in the dashboard under appearance > themes. Themes found on the internet are for self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG.

If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually and it will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying theme template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official support for the CSS upgrade, and very little unofficial support I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

If you are not fully ware of the differences between free blogs that are free hosted by wordpress.com and free wordpress.org installs for self hosting then I recommend you read the excellent support documentation entry prepared by Staff found here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you are proposing to create a theme for a wordpress.org install for self hosting then you are posting to the wrong forum and ought to be posting here > http://wordpress.org/support/

Thank you for the links. I have experience in both HTML and CSS but I am also working on a design that is too specific. Editing the CCS will do little to change the rigid themes templates on wordpress.COM. It is very important for me to use the theme that I designed myself because I’m not satisfied with the ones offered by wordpress.COM.

I may give a try to wordpress.ORG but I it looks like I’ll have to set up a different blog and I’m not sure how I will redirect my current visitors to this new platform. Meh…

You can easily move contents between wordpress.com and wordpress.org by using the export and import features. If you purchase a domain mapping upgrade (a 302 temporary redirect) then what your readers will experience is a seamless redirect from the root blog URLs to the new URLs. If you don’t all the links will be “broken” (404’s).

    Good to know! Thank you

Also note that wordpress themes files are PHP script, not HTML. HTML only themes will not work with wordpress since the theme has to be able to interact with the MySQL database and create the HTML for the visitor’s browser “on the fly” as required.
