Desktop app addition features
-
Once I draft my topic in Word, I then move it into my WordPress site, and from then on make changes using the WordPress desktop app (in Windows). However there isn’t any way to download the current content again.
Some features that would be really useful in the desktop app:
– While in the page editor, Select All should… select all. Then I can copy/paste back to Word. In 7.0.6 Select All doesn’t select any part of the page.
– There’s no print option while in the page editor. I have to go to my own website in a browser to do that. Should be supported in the editor.
– A download or export feature might also be useful under the Edit menu, this might download into a local HTML file? The I could open it in Word.

Hi there,
Thank you for your feedback. I have a few follow up questions if that is OK.
While in the page editor, Select All should… select all. Then I can copy/paste back to Word. In 7.0.6 Select All doesn’t select any part of the page.
I’m not sure what you mean by “select all” as this is not a button that is shown in the editor. You mean you are trying to select all the contents of the page using the the “Select All” keyboard shortcut (“Ctrl+A”) yes?
In the current desktop app, if you use that keyboard shortcut it selects all text for the currently active block. If you hit the keyboard combination a second time it will then select all blocks.
I recorded a video here so you can see, after I highlight one word in the first paragraph, the first time I Ctrl+A it highlights just that block. The second time I Ctrl+A it selects all blocks. Here is a link to the video: https://d.pr/v/HaifcN
If you try this on your site are you able to copy all blocks of text in the page you are working on?
There’s no print option while in the page editor. I have to go to my own website in a browser to do that. Should be supported in the editor.
As far as I know this is the first request we’ve had for this option. It’s not typical for site owners to need to print out their own content in this way, so can you give us a bit more info on why you feel the need to print content from the editor?
Thanks for the additional info!
A download or export feature might also be useful under the Edit menu, this might download into a local HTML file? The I could open it in Word.
I should probably clarify that Word is a text editing app for creating printed publications and it is not, strictly speaking, an online or website text editor. While it is possible to copy content from Word and paste it into the WordPress.com editor, once you start formatting your contents in the WordPress, the “block editor code” that makes up that formatting is not transferrable.
For that to be possible it would be necessary for Microsoft to build support for WordPress editor code into their Word app, which is not under our control. More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/microsoft-word/

Hi Jerry
First I’ll clarify why I mention Word; I agree it’s a printed-media app so it doesn’t pair well with WordPress. It’s just what I usually use to write the first draft of an article (or anything else), and to to generate pdf versions of the article. After my first version of the WordPress page and further WP edits though, the WP page becomes the latest version of the work and I’ll sometimes need a way to get it back to review and markup, think about, back up, or publish to pdf.
Your clue to first clicking in a page block before using ctl-A solved my problem though! If no block had been clicked yet, then the menu item Edit, Select All does not do anything. I suspect this is because “all” refers to all of a block, not all of the page file and no block has been picked yet.
Now that select all works, it does copy and paste back into Word so I have the functionality I need. This also means it can be printed from there, and there’s no need to add Print to the WP editor.
However a “download” or “export” function might be useful to people as another way to get a local copy of the page. I don’t know what the most logical format would be, but probably an HTML file.
Thanks

Hi there!
Thanks for your clarifications!
I’m glad to know that your problem was solved! As for the download/export functionality, you can visit your post/page (either in a preview or in the published form) and use your browser’s print option to save the page in a PDF.
If you prefer to download it in HTML, you can click Ctrl + S to save the whole page in an HTML file. Naturally, it will contain more than just the text. So if you prefer just the text, choosing your browser’s “print” option to save the post/page as a PDF may be more preferable.
Hope that helps!
