Desktop App not launching in Linux

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey, this is for the tar.gz version and not the .deb version. The .deb version is worked, but I am using OpenSUSE these days.

I can launch the app from the command line, but would prefer to not have to do this. When i attempt to double click on wpcom I see this error in the journal:

nautilus-autoru[18142]: Unable to find device for URI: Containing mount for file …

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I installed the app on the latest OpenSUSE version (Leap 15.2) and it works without any issues. I can open the app by clicking on the icon.

I suggest downloading a fresh copy of the tarball and try again.

Also, the error indicates that there’s an issue with a device or ISO file that is no longer attached. Maybe the app is trying to load stuff from that device.

I’m not a Linux expert, so I’m just making guesses here :)

hey – i’ve downloaded the 6.7.0 version and it has the same response. here is the full error:

Unable to find device for URI: Containing mount for file /home/<user>/Downloads/wordpress.com-linux-x64-6.7.0.tar_/wordpress.com-linux-x64-6.7.0/wpcom not found

i’ve taken my username out of it. – as you can see it appears the launcher just isn’t working for some reason.

When you loaded OpenSUSE, did you use KDE or Gnome as your desktop? I ask because OpenSUSE installers have KDE at the top – Also, I’m using Gnome. The truely strange part is that I can execute and launch the app via command line, just not nautilus – the gnome file manager.

Are there any dependecies that the app might need inorder to function? I saw some dependecies in the .deb package but don’t remember them. if you can share, then I can be sure that my installation has those as well.

    Thanks!

I used Gnome as I saw on your error message that you used Gnome’s file manager (Nautilus).

Everything is included in the tarball. Here are the steps I took to install the app:

    1. Extract the tarball:
    tar xvf wordpress.com-linux-x64-6.7.0.tar_.gz

    2. Open the directory that has been created

    3. Double click on the app icon to launch it

    Well this is pretty crazy.

For some context, I recently decided to move off of my preferred Linux distro fedora, it’s a long story and there’s a blog post about it.

Anyway, I’ve installed opensuse tumbleweed 2x, opensuse leap 15.2, and pop_os! – all of them have had the same issue. As I’m wiping my entire is drive and home partition every time, I can’t imagine the issue with my machine or the installations.

Could you open your terminal and run

    Journalctl -fe

Then attempt to open the the app? What I’m wondering is if the error I’m reporting is relevant.

While we’ve been working on this I’ve been attempting to build from source. My goal is to create an rpm package that would more available to rpm based distros in the future.

Thanks for your help in this, I appreciate your efforts !

  • I consulted with our developers and they suggested that it’s best to report this in our GitHub repo:

    https://github.com/Automattic/wp-desktop/issues

There, our developers could take a closer look and provide you with the support you need.

    Hey fstat.

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your efforts! I did submit issues on GitHub, but haven’t heard back yet. I’m just too low priority and that’s fine.

I was able to work around the issue and I typed up a blog post about it! Basically, I just needed to create a simple .desktop launcher and place it in the $HOME/.local/share/applications folder. I was then able to launch it from Gnome Shell and by pass Nautilus.

I wrote up a post about it here:

More WordPress Desktop Drama and Resolution!

It’s not going to be helpful for anyone else running into this, that’s why I wrote an Ansible playbook to perform all of the steps. I’ll be uploading that to GitHub shortly.

    Thanks again!
