Desktop layout now like a tablet – why?

  • Unknown's avatar

This afternoon (UK time) the reader layout has been changed. Please can we have “options for change” rather than imposed “this is what you will look at!” please.

Information on number of likes – not there. Appearance just like the tablet view – which is why I use(d) the desktop unless response time was too slow (and then switched to the tablet).

    Not a fan!!

@paulfg, we try to create a good balance that will work the best for the most people and also work best for serving a large amount of content in a way our designers think looks good and is better for readability.

@timethief, if you tag these with “reader refresh” (or do you think “new reader page feedback” is better?), then I will keep an eye on the tag and you can avoicd adding the longer modlook instructions reply to these. Sound cool?

    Thanks timethief.
Just added the tag, and not trying to “bash” – slightly surprised that changes “just happen” without any opportunity to understand why.
    Your comments are appreciated.

    Hi designsimply.
And thank you. Question One: “likes” and the number have disappeared – only lights up if I like. That was helpful information – so why suppress it?
Second question: the “style/theme” of the posts are now a uniform “same” in the viewer – again that difference was helpful in quickly spotting a “good read” in the viewer. Now it is harder to see those I would make a bee-line for. Why?

    @designsimply
I’ll can use this tag for you “reader refresh” and “modlook” into threads like these, if you want me too. Please advise.

You will have to used to that as unannounced changes is the 10 year pattern here. You may want to subscribe to https://en.blog.wordpress.com where announcements are made after the fact. You can read a bit more about this user interface redesign in year 2 of its development here: One Central Hub for All Your Content https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/12/16/dashboard-update/

Let me see what I can find out about the like count.

The style/theme of the posts in the Reader view have been modified a little but they were uniform (compared to each other) the same way they were before—if I am understanding you correctly. When I am trying to spot a good read, my eye goes straight to the large title font for each post. Is the part that you don’t like about the style update maybe that the post title is now below the featured image?

Just “reader refresh” on these please!

    Will do. :)

Let me see what I can find out about the like count.

The like count was removed as a design decision. There’s some discussion about adding them back but just for your own posts. What do you think?

If you love like counts, talk to me about why because I want to hear the feedback about it. The more specific the better.

  • Unknown's avatar

Own posts? The stats page and notifications give that. Here’s the thing: like counts on a post say “read me” as opposed to “here I am”. A page full of “here I am” is bland. Simple design, bland experience.
Same with the new layout: here I am. No excitement, no “old friends” no visual!
Yet you wax lyrical over themes, theme design, blog individuality – then whitewash the reader page. That isn’t design. That is “boring”. That is having to knock on every door kind of reading.
Is that specific? I hope so. Because change is not always change for the better. I love what you guys do. There is a community here. Lots of communities. Whitewashing the portals to those communities? Might give a designer a buzz – but there are thousands of real individual creative inspired and inspiring people here.
Please keep the tablet view option – when bandwidth is being clobbered it allows access. But to make every viewing experience the same, uniform, bland … that takes away so much.

Your reply is thoughtful, and I appreciate that. Thank you.

I hope WP will put the like count back in!

It’s a possibility. I can’t make any promises one way or the other though. It has to get worked out over time.
