Despite selecting a 'payment plan', I can't make the Payments Button block work

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

My website is on the Personal paid plan.

I am trying to add the Payments Button block to my Sidebar.

I have created my Stripe account and activated it. I have been able to successfully create a page and add the Donate block to it, see here: https://oblivionwithbells.com/become-a-regular-supporter/

But I have not been able to successfully add the Payments Button block to my sidebar. I seem to be able to add the block within the Customize page (/wp-admin/customize.php) and then click ‘select a previously created payment plan’ (see screenshot: https://imgur.com/gallery/x6msgZ1) as the block asks me to do. But when I click the Save button, the change is not reflected on my website. It has been over 24 hours now and my Payments Button block is still not showing up in my sidebar. Is something supposed to happen when I click a payment plan? Because nothing is happening when I do that…

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might be able to get the Payments Button block to work for me?

    Thanks very much

  • Hi @daveunderwood1,

I worked through the same steps that you outlined on a test site, and can confirm that I wasn’t able to select a payment plan with the payments button block.

Since this issue is reproducible, I submitted this bug report: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/62269

While I’m unable to offer a timeline to a resolution, you might want to just add a buttons block in its place, linking to a page like Become a regular supporter.

My apologies for this inconvenience. I hope that helps and please reach out again if you have any further questions.

    Hi staff-sheva,

Thanks getting back to me, and thanks for confirming you think it is a bug.

Thank you for the suggestion to use a Buttons block linking to that page with the Donor block, I have gone ahead and implemented that.

How will I know when the Payments Button block is fixed?

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

We’ll be notified via the Github report that a fix has been implemented, and at that point, we’ll notify you here. Otherwise, feel free to check on any updates via the link staff-sheva provided.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

I recently received an email saying that this issue on Github (Issue #62269) has had an UI update, and that the issue can’t be duplicated any more so the issue has been closed.

So I have tried adding the Payments Button block again to my sidebar. I am able to add the block, and the block does appear in the preview pane on the Customise page. When I save the changes and click on the block on my live website the block does seem to function as intended and I see this pop-up window: https://imgur.com/gallery/R8ar2UW.

I just wanted to ask some questions about whether the block is behaving as intended?

    1. The Payments Button block seems to come with some pre-set plans (see screenshot https://imgur.com/gallery/KvijH2a). But when I click ‘Add a new payment plan’, nothing happens. Should something happen when I click that?

    2. Next to the value of the plan (i.e. £2.50) there is an icon that seems to imply “reoccurring”. But when I click on the block on my live website (see screenshot https://imgur.com/gallery/R8ar2UW) it says ‘Pay £2.50 once’. Is this correct? The icon would seem to imply a reoccurring plan to me…

    3. The colour of the Payments Button block is dark grey (or it is at least for me). The problem with this is the black text on the block is hard to read on my live website. Should I be able to change the colour of this text? If so, how do I do that?

    4. The Payments Button block seems to come with some pre-set plans (see screenshot https://imgur.com/gallery/KvijH2a). How do I edit these, or remove some?

    Thanks very much

  • Hi there!

I’m glad to hear you were able to add the button now!

Hmm, you should be able to add a new plan by clicking that button. Is your browser blocking any popup windows by any chance?

Question 2 and 4 should be solved when you add your own plans. You can do that by going to My Site(s) → Tools → Earn → Collect Payments. Could you let us know if anything changes when you use personalized plans?

If you go to the Widgets section and click on the block, you should see on the right sidebar options to change both the text and background colors.

There’s also some more info here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/payments/#payment-button-block-settings.

Let us know how it goes, we’ll be happy to clarify further if needed.

    Hi staff-mckluskey,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I am still having issues all be it slightly different issues now.

I was not previously aware of the Earn page. When I visit ‘My Site(s) → Tools → Earn’ I am able to add new payment plans, which is great.

When I add a new Payment Button block to my Sidebar at customize.php, I am able to choose a payment plan I created on the Earn page. Here is where it gets weird. When I save the changes to my Sidebar, and refresh my live site, the new Payment Button block is there but it contains no text (it’s essentially a little dark grey egg-shaped button, please see screenshot https://imgur.com/gallery/SH4rKkW). The block also appears this way in Microsoft Edge. The Payments Button block should display the text ‘Buy me a cup of coffee’. The text is visible at customize.php, please see screenshot https://imgur.com/gallery/H1jP7fT. Can you please advise?

    Two additional things to note:
    1. The Payment Button block is clickable, and the website does seem to load the correct overlay.
    2. When I click on ‘Add a new payment plan’ from the Payments Button block on customize.php, I am taken to the Earn page which displays the message ‘You are not authorized to view this page’ in the main panel, please see screenshot https://imgur.com/gallery/XZXZyIl.

    Thanks very much

My operating system is Windows 10
I am using Google Chrome 100 and Microsoft Edge 100

In this case the issue is not the text you added to the button, but the emoji you added at the end. The button seems to have an issue with displaying the emoji, but if you remove it I do see the text.

The theme you are using on your site (Nucleare) is an older one that was released in 2011, many years before we had “blocks” or a “payments block” so I think that may be a factor in how things are behaving in the customizer.

What if you manage the widgets from here instead? https://oblivionwithbells1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

If you try within that interface, are you able to add a new payment plan?

    Thanks for the additional info!

    Hi staff-totoro,

Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, removing the emoiji fixed the problem 👍

You are right about clicking ‘Add a new payment plan’ from widgets.php instead, that does work. May I ask just one question about that? When I click ‘Add a new payment plan’ for a Payments Button block in widgets.php, I stay on the page and get to add the new plan in a right hand panel. In that panel is a toggle button for a payment plan setting called ‘Mark this payment plan as a donation’. What does that mean? That setting is not an option when I add a new payment plan over at https://wordpress.com/earn/payments-plans/…

    Thanks very much.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s because the Payments button is different from the Payments block. The button needed a way to designate donations versus payments since there isn’t a separate Donations button to add.

In blocks, there’s a separate Donations choice under https://wordpress.com/earn/ which is what you would use instead of a Payments block, and therefore you wouldn’t need the toggle to designate it as a donation. If you instead add the Payments block via widgets.php, there is also no toggle there.

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/donations/

    I hope that clarifies things!

    Hi helper-heroponriki,

I’m afraid that doesn’t clarify things for me sorry. I am probably misunderstanding, but I am keen to understand, so I hope you don’t mind me explaining what I’m seeing & what that means to me.

I am currently paying for the ‘Personal’ plan.

I can use the Payments Button block on my website to let people generate a payment overlay.

I can use the Donations block on my website to let people make a one-time donation, or set up a re-occurring donation.

I will say here that if there is a difference between payments and donations I don’t know it.

When I choose the Payments block, that block simply asks me if I want a Payment Button block or a Donations block or Premium Content (which obviously on my plan is not available). So the Payments block is irrelevant to me to be honest.

On https://wordpress.com/earn/ I do have two different links I can click: ‘Collect payments’ and ‘Manage donations’. Both those links take me to the same place = https://wordpress.com/earn/payments/oblivionwithbells.com

So like I say, if there is a difference between payments and donations I don’t know it. Is the “Mark this payment as a donation” difference meaningful to Stripe possibly?

Thanks so much for your help.

  • The short answer is that they are mostly the same thing with a few slight differences. The donations block allows you to display a range of donations for example. The payments block allows you to set payment for a specific product. Fees are the same for both, it’s mostly just a matter of presentation.

But in reality, you should use whichever one works for you.
