Details on PressRow replacement, Pilcrow

Well, I was looking for some of the features offered in the newer themes but so far hadn’t found anything like PressRow.
I hope that the change will be what I’m looking for. But being decidedly techno-UNsavy, I’m a bit nervous about what’s in store.
(By the way, the “Check Spelling” in this Comment Block is pretty cool. I haven’t come across that before!) -
@akwesasnecounterspin The default header image for Pilcrow is indeed different from PressRow’s (both are very nice images of old books).
If you’ve set a custom header image in PressRow that should carry over to the new Pilcrow theme automatically.

Pilcrow won’t support a ‘portrait’ image next to a ‘landscape’ image…

This is a shocker. Pressrow is such a classic that it should never go out of style. It has a wonderful, highly readable font among many other great features. Trying to fix this is going to cost me many frustrating hours.

Why is no one answering the most pressing question of why are current users of Press Row being forced to change. I have a blog to write things, not endlessly tinker with the layout.
Plus, I want to be able to keep the old books header on the Press Row theme. The new old books are rather garish.

@ksubi It shouldn’t be too difficult to transfer your current Custom CSS over to Pilcrow. If you run into any issues contact us in support and we’ll help out.
@victualling The major difference between PressRow and Pilcrow is the addition of features. The readable font has remained intact.

Sunds good, and will i be able to change the width of the layout, and header and define a custom header image/size via the CSS, since I’m not able to with Press Row?

Count me as another unhappy camper about the change. In preview mode images look a bit larger and a bit out of focus. I’d rather just stay with what I have and what is working for me.

I, too, am wondering why Press Row has to be retired?
Made the switch to check it out. My header image transferred over, but my search box that was in my sidebar didn’t make it? How do I bring it back?

OK, got the search widget back, but maybe WordPress needs to fix it on their end so that widget makes the transfer go more smoothly for other users.

I haven’t tried switching over yet, and I’m not all that worried about it either. I change mine around from time to time anyway. I try not to complain too loudly when a free service doesn’t do exactly what I want it to do–it’s free, after all.
But I have been reading this thread with interest and the question that comes to mind for me as a professional writer/publicist/marketer is this: Why don’t you have a “press version” story for why the old theme is being retired? The question has been asked over and over and the fact that it’s being ignored makes people think the answer is something big and bad and scary and/or that you’re simply not listening to them.
An answer could be that as technology changes, it becomes prohibitively expensive to continue supporting older versions of themes, or that overwhelming demand for new features has led to this better theme and the old one unfortunately can no longer be supported–those aren’t very good examples since I don’t actually know the real reason so it’s hard to do… but the point is, why hasn’t your PR department put a spin on this and given you an answer you can confidently and comfortably share & that would help to maintain the good relationship you already have with users?

Not sure if I feel comfortable with the change to Pilcrow. Well, not like I have a choice. Good luck to everyone.

@paulag1955 There are two main reasons for the switch. Firstly, PressRow’s creator has a history of building on WordPress while limiting the freedom of his users and violating the core WordPress license. Continuing to use a theme tied to the same author is bad for everyone. But that’s not the only reason for the switch. PressRow was sorely out of date and in need of a major refresh to bring it in line with the core WordPress experience. The new Pilcrow theme has a ton of options that let you customize and personalize your theme—custom menus, backgrounds, layouts, header images—while retaining a similar feel to the older PressRow theme.
If you want to grab the older books image and use it with Pilcrow, the older books image is available here:
@ksubi The header dimensions can’t be vertically with CSS but the default image could be hidden and a new background image added with CSS to the header.
@imrud The column sizes between the two themes should be almost identical. Contact us in support if you run into any trouble.
