determining number of *people* as opposed to *views* in stats

Just want to clarify how to determine the number of people visiting my blog as opposed to the number of views. At first I thought I was getting a very large number of people, for a new blog; but then noticed the breakdown in views. I realized the number of views must be larger than the number of individuals looking at my site.

My blog has a static home page: is it the number of views of that page alone that tells me how many individuals are going to my site every day?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Even homepage views won’t give you a real indication, since people can come back to the same page multiple times during the course of the day. Also, some people may find a specific post or page through a search or a link and then not visit the homepage at all.

The stats available aren’t perfect. There are other stats tools that wp.com bloggers have used to get other sorts of measurements. Timethief has an article on her site that you might find useful: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/05/14/blogging-metrics-getting-quantified/

WordPress.com does not record “uniques”. If you wish to have that information then you will have to use Non-Javascript<.strong> third party stats programs being mindful, that none are 100% accurate for many reasons.
What is a hit? In web analytics, a hit is any request for a file from a web server. By request means a hit calculates page content delivered, all images to complete that page, and any additional files that need to be loaded to make the web page you are looking at, appear the way it does.

What is a page view? A page view is a request to load a single page of an internet site that results from a page request from a web surfer clicking on a link on another HTML page which is pointing to the page in question.

What is a unique visitor? A unique visitor is access from a single IP to a web server that generates page views and hits during a particular visit. When a visitor has cookies disabled, there is no way of establishing if they are a unique visitor or not.

wordpress stats and all the others will never agree. Each one of them decides how and what they will count as a hit. Some count page views and some count unique visitors. Therefore, use any of the stats counters only as a general guide to hits.

Understand that an application that is not running on the same servers your blog is on is going to be susceptible to wild fluctuations. This is because all hits have to be transferred over the internet to different servers, and there are literally thousands of things that can go wrong between the server your blog is on and the server at the stats place.

Also be aware of the possibility that the software or hardware at the stats place may be broken and not recording, or counting things as intended.

I’m so sorry. I left a strong tag open by accident. I meant only to place “non-Javasciprt” in bold lettering. :(

Even when the stats packages are running on the same server the numbers vary from each other. I had a WordPress.ORG install and all the stats were on the same server and they did not match each other. They all jumped around. Don’t worry about the individual days but look at the long tern trend.
