Dev/staging and support questions

    Help with 2 questions:
    1. is this forum the only place to ask questions about working with WP.com? I don’t see any way to contact WP.com through email or phone.

    2. I’m trying to figure out a way to set up a dev/staging environment to redesign a site that lives on WP.com.

I read this article “Alternatives to Staging Sites” but the only options are to put up a “coming soon” page or develop locally. Neither of these options work for my situation. The client has an active site up and we can not close it down while redesigning the new site (the redesign will take at least a month) and developing locally is not an option (the client would need to test the functionality and proof the new site before going live).

I would like to develop the new site on WordPress.com hosting and keep the current site up (they have a Business Plan).

I’ve read suggestions saying to use a free site as staging, but I need it to have the same functionality available as with a Business Plan.

Would I have the client purchase another account with a Business Plan, and I develop it there and when it’s ready would I then contact support and have the point the domain to the new site? The domain is registered with Register.com.
I’m not sure how that would work with the domain name, etc. Once the new site is up, how do they get rid of the old one so they are not paying for both? Any help, advice, suggestions are all welcome. Thanks so much.

  • Hey there @sandramars, is the site hosted here with our services?

If it is, are you able to log in with the account that owns the upgrade? That should have access to live chat support, where we can answer these questions more quickly.

In a nutshell, you wouldn’t need a separate domain. The staging site would need a Business Plan if you needed outside plugins and themes.

And again, assuming it is hosted here, you shouldn’t have to change any settings or register a new name. You can use a staging address, then have support point the domain there when everything is ready.

I do recommend chatting if you can (from the account that owns the upgrade) since I’m sure you have more questions. We’ll email with details. Cheers!

@supernovia Thanks so much for your response! Yes the site is hosted here, they are on the Premium plan for now; but for the new site they will need a Business plan, because we intend to use plugins and change the theme and customize the theme. I will continue this through chat. Thanks for the email, I have many questions. Cheers!
