Did I configure DNS correctly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to configure DNS records to do a self-hosted wordpress.org site on Nearlyfreespeech.net. Just curious to know if I’ve done everything correctly.

    A ns.phx6.nearlyfreespeech.net 208.94.116.161
    A ns.phx8.nearlyfreespeech.net 208.94.117.33

    This is all I’ve added.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Are you trying to use your domain movingmercifullyforward.com (registered here at WordPress.com) with that self-hosted site? Or are you setting up a completely separate self-hosted site?

If you are setting up a separate self-hosted site, your website host for that site can help you find the DNS records you need to use for your domain. Your domain registrar for nearlyfreespeech.net can also help you enter those DNS records correctly.

This support forum is specifically for sites hosted at WordPress.com, so I don’t have the tools or information to help with your self-hosted site. If you have other questions about a self-hosted WordPress site, you can also get help in the WordPress.org support forums here:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

I am wanting to move the site hosted here, to a self-hosted one. If I understand correctly, the domain registration stays with wordpress.com, regardless of where the content is hosted. Is that right?

The issue we were running into was that there were some upload limits for media that made it easier to move the site from being hosted on wordpress.com to a wordpress.org self-hosted model.

I thought you’d still assist with that piece?

    Hi there,

If you’d like to point your domain movingmercifullyforward.com to a self-hosted site, you can change the domain’s name servers to point to your new website host. I just wanted to make sure that was what you were trying to do (rather than setting up a new, separate site with a separate domain).

In that case, yes, your domain will stay registered here at WordPress.com but the contents of your new self-hosted site will appear when someone visits that domain. We have a guide for changing your domain’s name servers here: Change Name Servers

I can certainly help with that step if you run into any issues — just let me know. :)

    CNAME movingmercifullyforward.com movingmercifullyforward.nfshost.com.
    A ns.phx6.nearlyfreespeech.net 208.94.116.161
    A ns.phx8.nearlyfreespeech.net 208.94.117.33

This is how I have it set up on the Store > My Domains > Custom DNS screen.

When I browse to “movingmercifullyforward.com” it still goes to the old content, that’s set up on wordpress.com

I know it takes time for the DNS to update… but I’m not sure how long.

    ping -c 3 movingmercifullyforward.com
    PING movingmercifullyforward.com (76.74.254.120) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from . (76.74.254.120): icmp_seq=1 ttl=48 time=61.0 ms

    ping -c 3 movingmercifullyforward.nfshost.com

I did an export of the content from the site set up on wp.com, set up the new wp.org site on NFSN (nearlyfreespeech.net), and imported.

Changed the initial “Welcome to WordPress” post to something unique, so that I’d know once everything was working properly.

But all checks so far this morning, show that it’s still pointing to the wp.com content.

    Hi there,

You’ll need to open the domain manager and change your name servers there, rather than on the custom DNS screen. We have instructions for how to do that here: Change Name Servers

    Excellent. That did the trick.

    Thank you for your help!
