Did WordPress change Admin page June 17th?

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog Admin display changed today (June 17) from a gray background with black letters to total black background with white letters. Did something happen in my system? Get same from Firefox and Chrome, both. Did some new change get pushed onto us? This new form is difficult. Yes, I cleared all cache, cookies and history of all my browsers.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, you can read about it in an earlier announcement in the WordPress.com News. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/preview-our-future-design/

Previously optional, apparently it’s now “live” everywhere.

    OMG yes, you are right.
This did come and I promptly ignored it. My Bad, verrry bad on my part. Thin white letters on a black background are no nicer on the dashboard than they are on private blogs.

Too late now, we all got over contrasted, like it or not. Thanks for responding so quickly

    I absolutely hate it, too.

My blog’s not displaying properly any more. Just headings and not the summary.

Reading white on black is a pain.

    So much less user-friendly.

I even changed my theme, thinking some glitch had confused my photo-blog theme with my technical-blog theme.

    It’s plain horrible.

This change appears to be more relevant for mobile users. It is particularly not relevant to the type of blog I have which requires me to publish material on desktop. I find it interesting that there is no option to change the color scheme like the minor one which used to be available previously. Not everyone would want to see black.

Here’s an idea – why don’t wordpress wait until there’s a problem before getting bright ideas about fiddling with what we’re all happy with?

The changeover modified my dashboard, too. I had ability to get a post reviewed before it is released, that was taken off.

WordPress developers are actually doing covert training. We find a great option, install it, then forget how we did it. Free with upgrade is opportunity to find the way to get it back again. Enough “upgrades” and I will be able to easily recall the steps. But for now…

@lasttechage-Are you referring to the Post/Page Editor Writing Helper’s “Request Feedback” module? It’s still there. If you can’t see the module, make sure it is enabled in the Screen Options (tab at the top right of the Post/Page Editor screen).

I’m giving this dashboard makeover a thumbs up. I’m grateful to those who have improved my blogging experience by undertaking this task. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/preview-our-future-design/#comment-175138

I believe it’s unrealistic to think that WordPress.com will ever become frozen in time. That’s not the nature of cyberspace and saying “If it’s not broken don’t fix it” is simply an empty cliche. Our operating systems are constantly updated and so is the software and the features it provides.

WordPress.com is on continuous roll-out. Changes to the code are being made many times daily and new features are being introduced, while existing functions and features are being improved and upgraded.

As you pointed out above feedback is open on the New Admin Design and everyone of us is free to provide our constructive criticism directly to Staff by using the feedback form provided at this link http://en.wordpress.com/admin-feedback/

As there is no support issue in this thread and as we are not allowed to create discussion threads and I tagged this thread for closure.

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to close it, myself.
Continuous change is not the same as continuous improvement. This is in the latter category, I think. No argument against people who want to put their own mark on things (except spray paint on buildings), and the dashboard is ok, once I reinstal the options.

But, new is not better, and, as an engineer friend once told me, “Better is the enemy of Good.” I had to figure this out on my own projects to understand him. Sure seems some changes are in this very last category.

Have you submitted your feedback by using the form Staff provided yet? if not do it now because posting here is a waste of your time, Volunteer time and Staff time. http://en.wordpress.com/admin-feedback/

    timethief,

Much respect to yo and everything you do.

But what you mean is that you’ve tagged this thread for censorship.

It’s horrible, I hate it and so do the other admins on my blog.

If you’re really interested in feedback then keep this thread open.

JustJennifer, My ScreenOptions tab no longer includes this switch to enable. I am glad you made the comment, though, I thought I lost my memory on what I had done to get it.

we are not allowed to create discussion threads

    @timethief, when did this happen?

    @theneedleblog
Censorship! in a pig’s eye. If you want to provide feedback then do it in the appropriate place for that. I repeat the feedback form provided by Staff is open. http://en.wordpress.com/admin-feedback/

There is no support issue in this thread and that’s why I tagged it for closure.

Long ago now when the Off Topic and Showcase Forums were removed due to the abuse of them. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/forums-housekeeping?replies=1

    Timethief,

The point is that if there is a public thread then others will be encouraged to comment.

If you really are interested in feedback then you should leave the thread open.

However, if you are interested in closing down public discontent, then by all means close the thread down.

If you’re interested in some of the work behind the updated dashboard design, there is a ton of info at http://make.wordpress.org/ui/tag/mp6/

There is also lots of good info in the announcement about it (linked earlier) and in the comments there.

It’s a bold change, and a lot of work went into it.

There will always be people who don’t like change. We love our users and we do listen to your feedback, but we can’t make every change suggested by everyone. Decisions are made with that feedback in mind though, so if you have constructive feedback with specifics or bug reports, you should send them to http://en.wordpress.com/admin-feedback/ as timethief suggested.

I am going to close this thread because I don’t think more replies here will add anything new that hasn’t already been covered. If you find a bug, report it at http://en.wordpress.com/admin-feedback/ or create a separate forum thread with as much detail as possible and someone will take a look. Make sure you have searched the forums to see if your issue has already been reported first!
