Did you recently integrate Jetpack/Photon (or its features) into your platform?
-
When I paste HTML code into a new blog post, the source line gets automatically changed. For example, if the source line I paste in is:
src=”http://www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/xxxxx/biglink.gif”
It gets changed to:
src=”https://i0.wp.com/www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/xxxxx/biglink.gif”
As I understand, the plug-in Jetpack/Photon causes this to happen, but now it seems to be happening even to bloggers who never added Jetpack. Did WordPress recently integrate Jetpack/Photon (or its features) into your platform?
Thank you,
GregThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey Greg,
Jetpack is a plugin developed by Automattic, and requires a WordPress.com account to operate.
You’re right that if the Photon portion of Jetpack is enabled, the URL for images on the site will appear similar to the example you’ve given.
More on Photon here:
http://jetpack.me/support/photon/
It’s hard to work out what’s going on with the blogs you are describing without a concrete example. Do you have anything specific in mind?
Thanks,

Hi clickysteve,
Thank you for your reply. I set up a test blog and did a test post here: https://gregurbanspoon.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/test-2/
I copied and pasted in the HTML code for the image you see. The src line of the code is : src=”http://www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/1881133/biglink.gif”
But WordPress changes it to: src=”https://i0.wp.com/www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/1881133/biglink.gif
I did not install Jetpack for this test blog, so it seems as if WordPress must have recently started automatically changing the src line of HTML. Do you know if WordPress indeed did make any recent changes such as this?
Thanks,
Greg -
Hi all,
I seem to have the same issue: Jetpack enabled without me knowingly having enabled it, and no Jetpack entry in the control panel:

Hey Greg.
Blogs or sites hosted here on WordPress.com do not use the Jetpack plugin. They have many of the features already integrated already.
Only self-hosted sites running the software from WordPress.org will have the Jetpack plugin as an option.
See more about the differences here:
The reason you are seeing the Photon URL on your test blog is because it is hosted here at WordPress.com, which automatically uses the Photon service to cache images for improved performance. This is the default behaviour.
Hope that clears things up!

Is there any way to change it so that it does not use the Photon service to cache images?

Hi Greg,
Images from third party sites are cached using the Photon service for improved load times, but images stored on your WordPress.com site are not.
There is no way to turn off the caching for images that aren’t hosted on WordPress.com. Is there a particular issue you are trying to resolve?

Hi clickysteve,
Thanks for continued help. Here’s the issue. I work for Urbanspoon.com. Bloggers can add our image links (like the one you saw on my test blog) to their blog posts and our system detects the image link and adds their blog post to Urbanspoon.com. But if the image is cached using the Photon service, our system can’t detect it. This is a huge problem because of the thousands of bloggers we have on our site, I’d estimate that about a third of them are using WordPress.com for their blogs. So if you can think of anything that either we or the bloggers can do to make our system able to detect the image links, please do let me know. Thanks.

Hi,
I have a similar issue. I’m hotlinking to images that are updated in a daily or weekly basis, as this from NASA (ice, weather…) :src=”http://neptune.gsfc.nasa.gov/uploads/images_db/CSIC_figure2.png”
And WordPress changes it to:
src=”https://i0.wp.com/neptune.gsfc.nasa.gov/uploads/images_db/CSIC_figure2.png”
The hotlink has been working fine for years, until today when I have noticed this issue for the first time.
Is there any plans to allow users to turn off the caching for their sites or some parts of their sites?
Thank you

As I understand, self-hosted sites running the software from WordPress.org have the Jetpack plugin as an option, so you can turn off the caching. So switching to WordPress.org is one option for you.
You can read more about the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com here:

We have no plans to allow users to turn off caching. And there is no way to disable this feature on WordPress.com sites.
Let me know if you have more questions.
