difference between category and page?

  I may be stupid, but I can’t figure out the difference between a category and a page, and how to get something on either of them. Is it maybe dependend on the kind of theme one uses? I know a little bit about programming websites, but this one is a mystery to me.

  Can anybody help me out with this one?
