Difference between friends and affiliates?

One of my friends blogs was recently suspended for affiliating so she warned me. My questions is what is the difference between having your personal friends blogs linked to your site(with them linking back to you) and an affiliate? I never could find the affiliate rules in the terms of service but from the other discussions i’ve read there was a suggestion to put the links in the Blogroll category. I dont want to be suspended over something so simple.
    What should be done?

The following two support pages may clarify what kind of link you can put on your blog:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
    http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/ (under “Affiliate marketing blogs”)

This being said, I invite you to contact staff directly (like I did) instead of taking the risk of interpreting the support docs and forum threads your way and ending up suspended:

If you’re linking to friends because you appreciate what they blog about then that is not a problem. If someone is paying you to include a link, or the site to which you link sells things then you might be in trouble. Check out the terms of service and the details on advertising. If you’re still not sure then contact staff and ask them to take a look and let you know one way or the other.
