Difference between Plans and Domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I wanna change my blog URL from felixfelicitatedblog.wordpress.com to felixfelicitated.com. However, I can see two ways to do so.

The Personal Plan costs ₹200 per month, meaning ₹2400 annually.
Then there is domain registration. To get the felixfelicitated.com domain, it costs
    ₹1260.

    I don’t know what’s the difference here.

If I get the ₹1260 one, does that mean all other features listed under the Personal Plan won’t be there? I just want the domain-independent of the wordpress.com URL. For that, the ₹1260 plan seems sufficient. Will that do? Or, do I need to buy both the plan and domain for ₹3660?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

All our annual plans offer a domain for free for the first year. After that, the domain will be renewed at its regular price.

If you only purchase a domain without a plan, then it’ll redirect to your free .wordpress.com address.

So, your best option is to get the annual Personal plan which will allow you to register your domain for free for the first year.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

A follow-up question: After my annual personal plan expires next year, can I keep my purchased domain for next year by paying separately for it? Without paying for the annual plan next year?

    Thanks.

Yes if you want to no longer have a site with a custom domain address here but wish just to keep paying for the domain in case you decide to have a site here again in the future or if you intend to connect/transfer your domain to a site at another host in a years time.

  • Hi @felixfelicitated,

You can choose to keep your domain, as plans and domains renew separately. Please keep in mind, you’ll still need a plan upgrade to set your custom domain as your primary domain. Regardless, the domain will continue to load your site at its free address.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks again.

Is it possible to just purchase the domain now without the plan, but in future, when I purchase both the plan and domain, the first time I purchase the plan, the domain will be free for the year?

Or is this only applicable for purchasing the domain AND plan for the first time?

  • Hi there,

The free domain credit would only apply if you have newly purchased the plan, and does not take into account any existing domains you may have.

We can sometimes make an adjustment after the fact (to credit you for your existing domain) but in the beginning at least you would need to pay full price and then contact us to see if we can make an adjustment and return some of the funds.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hello. If I purchase the domain now, will I lose it in the future, if I am a bit late to renew it next year?

    Thanks.

    Hi there!

Once your domain is expired, it falls into the Grace Period:

For most TLDs registered through WordPress.com, an expired domain falls into a grace period for about ten days to two weeks. During this short window, the domain can be renewed at the regular price. If you experience difficulty renewing your domain during this time, you can contact Support for additional help.

If you don’t renew it under the Grace Period, you’ll be charged an extra $80 redemption fee:

After the grace period ends, your domain enters the redemption period, the length of which can vary. This means the domain name can still be renewed, but there is an $80.00 redemption fee required in addition to the normal renewal cost. (This is standard practice for domain registrars.)

  • Hi there,

You only own a domain for as long as you continue paying for it, so if you let it expire, you do run the risk of losing it. But as @wpnas explained above, expired domains go through a lengthy process that lasts around 70 days before they’re deleted completely, and during that period you can usually still recover it. But the longer you wait, the harder and more expensive it becomes to recover the domain, so in general it’s best to make sure it doesn’t expire.

Our system is set up to help prevent this as well – every upgrade you buy with us has auto-renewal enabled by default, so as long as you don’t manually switch that off, and make sure that the credit card we have on file for you remains current, we’ll make sure your domain is renewed automatically each year.

We start trying to auto-renew your domain 30 days before it expires, and will send you multiple reminder emails should auto-renew fail for any reason. We also send advanced warning notices as a domain approaches renewal, at 60 days (i.e. 30 days before auto-renew) if auto-renew is enabled, or starting from 90 days if auto-renew is disabled.

Let me know if you have any other questions :)
