difference between portfolio and media in the dashboard?

  I’m a total newbie. I’m trying to set up a WP portfolio site for my artwork and I’m trying to get oriented. I would like to know the difference between the media library and the portfolio option in the dashboard sidebar.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  I know I am not helping here, but what is the theme you are using called? It looks really nice, as I am also setting up a blog/website for my University work! :)
