Difference Between Posts and Portfolio?
-
Can someone explain to me what exactly is the difference between posts and portfolio? I must be missing something, because I don’t see anything different between them, and I don’t seem to understand the setup/structure difference (if there is one.) To me, it looks like the same feature with two different names, which basically makes one redundant.
From what I read on WordPress.com about it, portfolio is just ‘a specific type of post.’ Well… what makes it specific, and therefore different, from the common post? What is the benefit of a portfolio post that a regular post doesn’t have?

Hey there,
Many thanks for reaching out and happy to help with this!
Well… what makes it specific, and therefore different, from the common post? What is the benefit of a portfolio post that a regular post doesn’t have?
So the first main difference is the post structure. For example, for a project/portflio you would have
- examplesite.com/project/project-name-one
- examplesite.com/project/project-name-two
- …and so on.
The other main difference is the theme templating for a portfolio – this may look different to a post to make it stand out.
The last main difference is that, portfolios can have their own set of taxonomies (assigned types, categories, tags) which would not overlap with posts.
I hope this is useful information thus far.
Out of curiosity, what makes you want to ask this, maybe there’s some advice I can provide and guide you in the right direction of what you may need for the site. (To note, all of our pricing and plans can be seen here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/)
Looking forward to hearing more!
