Difference Between Site Redirect and Domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I have a couple of sub blogs with subdomains of railturkey.org.

When I check from the “My Upgrades” section, one of the subdomains, tr.railturkey.org is seen as domain, where all others seen as site redirect (ie. news.railturkey.org).

Is there anyone who knows the difference?

    Thanks in advance.

Difference Between Site Redirect and Domain

Is there anyone who knows the difference?

    Of course:

    Site Redirect

    Well, thanks for your interest.

I had already read those sections. There, in “site-redirect” section, it’s talking for websites which hosted by other platforms.

But my all my subdomains (tr.railturkey.org, news.railturkey.org, haber.railturkey.or, akademi.railturkey.org) are hosted by wordpress. I bought subdomains from wordpress. If I didn’t miss stg, all are bought following the same procedure.

So I couldn’t understand why one is seen as domain (tr.railturkey.org), and others seen as site-direct..

And I wonder if those “redirect” sites have any kind of disadvantage?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Onur!

We’ll actually want to switch these out for domain mapping upgrades. Since they’re the same cost, I can go ahead and trade out the site redirects for domain mapping upgrades across all of the selected sites. Just reply back to give me the go ahead!

Site redirects are meant for directing a site address to another, different site. For example, you could setup a redirect for railturkeyistasyon.wordpress.com to go to newsite.wordpress.com (fictitious). Currently, you’re using the upgrade to replace the URL railturkeyistasyon.wordpress.com with a subdomain. That’s the intended use of a domain mapping upgrade. The site redirect does work in this capacity, but there are some issues that may arise.

Let me know if you would like me to switch these out for you!

    Hi,

If I understood correctly, you’ll switch all my site redirects to domain mapping upgrade..

And that will not change any url’s, google records, my statistics etc.. But I’ll get rid of risk of some issues that may arise with site redirects..

Have I understood correctly? If yes, please go ahead.. If there’s anything I’m missing, please let me know..

My subdomains which seen as “site redirect” are:
    news.railturkey.org
    haber.railturkey.org
    akademi.railturkey.org
    terminal.railturkey.org

I’m very glad to meet a happiness engineer.. :)

    Thanks in advance.

Could you also write me which procedure do I have to follow if I buy another subdomain for my wordpress hosted blog, so that it’s not seen as “site redirect” but as “domain mapping”??

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Onur!

Correct – you shouldn’t notice any difference in terms of stats, URLs, etc. I went ahead and changed all of the upgrades out for you. They’re all working correctly on my side. If you notice anything amiss, please let me know.

Could you also write me which procedure do I have to follow if I buy another subdomain for my wordpress hosted blog, so that it’s not seen as “site redirect” but as “domain mapping”??

Definitely! We have some instructions on how to do this here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#adding-a-subdomain-if-your-domain-is-registered-elsewhere-and-mapped-to-wordpress-com

In short, you would want to start here:

    https://wordpress.com/domains

Select the site you would like to map a domain to and then enter the domain and click “Map It” as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1e0rA

That will setup a mapping upgrade versus a site redirect. Depending on the domain you’re setting up (subdomain vs. root domain), you’ll need to do a bit of extra legwork to get the domain working correctly. I did that for you in this case. The instructions above provide a pretty solid breakdown, but if you ever run into any trouble, just let us know. We’re happy to help!
