Difference between the two “Add Users”
-
One of my blogs is set up as a private blog. On the privacy configuration screen there is an Add Users button for allowing access to the blog. Similarly, there’s an Add Users button in the Users screen for setting up users with roles.
Can someone please explain if there’s a difference between the two? In other words, if I want to add users and give them author permissions, do I need to add them twice or will once suffice from the Users screen?

FAQs has a good description of roles and instructions for set up.

The forum search box has some threads on this too.
Here is more:
* Log in and open the Dashboard for your blog (My Dashboards >> “blogname”)
* Click on “Users”
* Under “Add Users from the Community” choose their email address and then their “Role”. -
Thanks for the FAQ references. However, I was specifically asking if there is indeed a difference between adding a user from the Users dashboard page or from the Options / Privacy page for private blogs.

Users > Add user
Gives that user a role on your blog and access to the admin to whatever level you decide.Privacy > Add user
They can see the blog. Nothing else. -
I’m similarly confused by one thing — I tried to add a user to Privacy area, but it won’t let me add them unless they are already in the User area. [ Note: I don’t want any users to have authoring or any ability to post… but I want to make it private so that only specific people can read the blog. ] Do I need to add them as a Contributor anyway (even though they won’t post) and then also add them to the Privacy area?

No you do not need to add them to both areas. But if you want it private and them to be the only ones to view the blog then they must have a wordpress account to log in and view it. When they sign up they have the option of just getting a “username only” or a “username and blog”. They will want the “username only” option if they do not plan on getting a blog of their own. If you then want to have them add to the blog then you can make them contributors, authors, editors, or also admins. But they do not need to both happen in order to view the blog.
