difference between web hosting and a server?

  To take my wordpress site off wordpress.com and to customize it and all that good stuff do I have to buy a server or simply buy web hosting space?

  question over at the WordPress.ORG forums. most blogger’s
  here 2 WordPress.Com Wouldn’t understand the question well
  enough to provide you with a accurate answer.
