Different email address for comments and notifications
-
I think I understand the answer is “no” but I thought I’d double-check to be sure.
Is it possible for the email WP uses to log me in and to send me notifications to be *different* from the email that other bloggers see when I comment on their blogs?
Given that I do use the first as part of the log in, it almost seems a bit of a security issue passing it around so freely?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Wyrd – Not really, no. I suppose you could create a second user-only account for the purposes of commenting, but it isn’t necessary.
For security, I just recommend using a very strong, unique password for both your WordPress.com account and another for your email account. I also highly recommend turning on Two Step Authentication for your account here: https://wordpress.com/settings/security/
Two Step is very secure. :) Let me know if you have further questions!

Hello! Thanks for the response!
I’m actually less concerned about account security than about privacy. (I’ve worked with computers since the late 70s, so I’ve learned to take passwords very seriously!)
The situation is this: I have a personal email account I’ve used for over ten years as my primary. I own the domain name, which happens to be my last name. I use this account as my “real” account for any sites that need a personal contact email.
The problem is that even if I alias the first name (e.g. “[redacted]”), I still give away my last name, which for now I’d like to avoid. And, of course, I’m doing this every time I comment.
So I’m caught between wanting to use my key email account for notifications, but also wanting to preserve my privacy as “Wyrd [redacted]”. (Although now that I’m retired, the privacy is becoming less and less critical.)
It would be really helpful to me if the notification email and the email used in comments could (optionally?) be different. Really, really helpful. Like, “I’d be eternally grateful and sing your praises from the highest rooftop!” helpful! :D
[Just as a data point: as something of a closet Luddite, I carry a cell phone only for calling out in case of emergency (because, just try to find a pay phone these days). My cell is frequently turned off, and I never text. Ever. So the two-step thing isn’t really a win for me!]

Hi Wyrd,
Hmm. In that case, you have a few options:
1. Only comment while logged OUT of WordPress.com and don’t enter your email in the comment form.
2. Change your primary email to a less personal email address and set up an email filter for notifications (you might be able to forward them to your primary email address, depending on your email client).
3. Create a second WordPress.com user account for commenting purposes.I hope this helps!

Oh, I like the forwarding idea! That might be doable (I’m using gmail, just started and not super familiar yet).
Even if not, I understand what my options are, so thanks!!
[FWIW, the first option isn’t attractive from the point of representing yourself and building network. The third option is interesting, especially combined with recent advice I read about having a second blog for experimenting with themes and stuff. I might look into that! Thanks, again!]
