Different headers on different pages

Hi everyone, I’m hoping you can help me. I’ve been through the WordPress help and though the lady was very nice she couldn’t solve this one!

I’m trying to set up a simple website with blog attached. Website is sallynex.com, blog is sallynex.com/blog.

I’m using the Oxygen theme which allows featured images. Trouble is that I can’t get it to display my website header on the three main pages of the website and my blog header on the blog page.

I’ve managed to get the website header onto the three main pages using the featured image option but it then doesn’t display on the blog page: and if I put the right header on the blog page it changes to that on the main pages too.

I’m tearing my hair out trying to fix this. I’ve even tried to change the theme (to Ascetica, which I didn’t like much but was bearable) – still couldn’t work it. It’s not exactly a complicated change – I don’t want to do rolling headers or get them to change all the time or anything like that, just change the header on the blog to the title of the blog rather than the title of the website.

I think I probably have to change the php coding – I’ve read about this on other forum threads. But I don’t even know where to start on changing the header code – I’m willing to try as I have html and could learn php (enough to do this anyway), but I can’t find out where the coding is ‘kept’. Do I need to upgrade to a custom design? or is it done via CSS?

If someone could walk me through this, or suggest an alternative solution to the problem, I’d be really grateful.

    Thanks,

    Sally

    a) You can’t “find out where the coding is kept” because on wordpress.com we don’t have php access.
    b) To do what you’re looking for, you need a theme in which featured images replace the default header image (for instance Chateau, Twenty Ten or Twenty Eleven). Oxygen is not one of these themes.
    c) Yes, it’s possible in Oxygen via CSS editing (that is, if you buy the Custom Design upgrade).

    Thank you – that’s helpful.

I did change to a theme (Ascetica) which I was told does support featured images replacing the default header image – but when I tried to do that, the image disappeared altogether from the blog page. Apparently the featured image only works on the ordinary pages, not on the page that’s set up to be a blog.

If I do go ahead and buy the Custom Design upgrade, is it easy to change this in Oxygen (still my favoured theme) via CSS? And if so – how?

Thank you for all your help – much appreciated.

    You’re welcome.

“I did change to a theme (Ascetica) which I was told does support featured images replacing the default header image”.
    You were told wrong.

“Apparently the featured image only works on the ordinary pages, not on the page that’s set up to be a blog.”
Yes of course: featured images apply to individual posts and static pages, not to dynamic pages such as the main posts page or a category page. But that’s not a problem if you select a theme such as the ones I suggested: the image for the static pages will be set as a featured image to those pages (including the one you’ve set as your front), and the image for the “Blog” page will be uploaded in Appearance > Header.

“If I do go ahead and buy the Custom Design upgrade, is it easy to change this in Oxygen (still my favoured theme) via CSS? And if so – how?”
If and when you buy it, you’ll post about this in the CSS forum.

Ah right (it was the WordPress lady who told me about Ascetica… well that explains a lot).

I don’t suppose you have a list of themes which do support featured images? I like Chateau but it only has two columns and my blog works best with three (sorry to be fussy!)

Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven don’t work for me at all.

Thank you for all your help!

See the first group of themes in this post of mine:

Newer themes not included in my list: Academica, Book Lite, Yoko.

Oh this is completely brilliant – what a great thread, thank you so much for pointing me towards it – plenty to work with there.

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it!

    You’re welcome!
(By the way, who was that “WordPress lady”? WordPress.com doesn’t offer live support.)

  • Unknown's avatar

It wasn’t live – it was by email, but she was so quick responding it was more like chat :D No names, no pack drill as she was doing her best and we all make mistakes…

Still it doesn’t sound like WP staff. The fact that you also mentioned php makes me suspect you were looking for help in the wrong place!

No the PHP thing came from another thread on this forum, not from her. And she had a @wordpress.com email and I got a follow-up email from WordPress Support asking for feedback – so I’m pretty sure she was genuine.
