Different posts to different pages

Hi there, my blog has regular (essay type) entries and poetry. I have a page of my blog labeled ‘poetry’ and I’d like to be able to have the poetry posts appear there. I’m not sure how to do this. Is there a way I can designate which page a post will appear on when I write it?

Also, I have another page called The Sewing machine Project–I have a full website for this project that has a blog attached (also in WordPress). Is there a way I can have the blog posts I do on the SMP website show up on the SMP page of my personal blog?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

First, edit those posts and assign them a category based on the topic/type of post.

Next, create a custom menu for your site. You’ll be able to add the categories to the menu directly, creating what’s known as category pages – special pages that work like the regular posts page, but that only shows posts in a specific category.

I’m having the same issue. I understand that I could put categories in the menu and assign blog posts to categories – but the problem is that I’d like custom landing pages for each topic, and it appears that it’s not possible to customize category pages.

Is there a work-around where blog posts can be assigned to specific pages, as though they are categories?

    Thanks!

  • Hey @mandyt46,

Based on what I think you are saying, there is in fact a custom landing page for each topic you’re making. Each post page that is created should still have its unique URL even after you assign it to a category. Am I understanding your question correctly?

    Let me know, thanks!

    Thanks for replying!

I’m a newb, so forgive me if I’m not understanding you or if I’m not clear!

My intention is to have a static front page, with main topics in a menu. What I’d like to do is write a blog post, assign its category, and have the post automatically fall in under those topic headings. That would work perfectly if I had categories as menu options.

But…those category pages cannot be edited or customized as far as I can tell, and I’d really like to do that. So I switched all of the menu items to pages and customized them as I’d like – but now I cannot figure out how to get blog posts to post to those pages. I could do it manually, I suppose, but that will be considerably more time consuming.

    Does that make sense?

I’m a fan of category pages but another alternative that allows the insertion of posts on a page is to use the display posts shortcode.

    Display Posts Shortcode

Among the arguments is the category one and there are other arguments that give you some control over what to include.

Unfortunately the short codes trick doesn’t work with business plan sites using plug-ins…

    Still searching for a work-around.

  • @mandyt46 you should still be able to use short codes. If you’ll let us know how you’d like to customize the category pages, there may be some other solution out there (via a plugin, for example).

Also, since your site is on a business plan, do you mind starting a new topic and adding “modlook” to it? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

That way the original poster here, who has a free site, won’t be getting suggestions that are irrelevant to them.
