Different sizes for my images

  Hi everyone,
  I’ve got a question about images. I would like to know if I can have a thumbnail in posts of my first page and a larger image when you get into the post (using text too). And then, can I use the same for the posts listed in the category? Sorry for my english, I try to be clearer: I want a larger image in the post, but only a thumb in the posts listed in my home page and in my categories. Can it be? It depends on theme choice?
