Different themes on different pages?
-
Perhaps a dumb, oft-asked question, but I’ll ask anyway: can you use a different theme on a second page than you used on your main page? If so, how? I tried to create a new page, then give it a different theme, but all the pages changed.

Seriously, readers find it much easier. Otherwise there’s much confusion about whether or not your click has been hijacked. You WANT your whole blog to look the same.

/nod to raincoaster. I agree that a blog needs a cohesive theme on all pages so as to create a presence that’s unique without being jarring. Arguably if pages of any blog are different there is no “theme”.
It’s trendy (but IMO stupid from a page rank point of view — See below) to have a static front page — a landing page that people have to click through to get to your blog posts. You can do this on a wordpress.com blog if you so choose. And you can upload images and enter text of your choice on it. In that case that static page would become your front page. Here is where to do that –> Options –> Reading
Front Page
Front page displays:
Your latest posts
A static page (select below)
* Front page:
* Posts page:
Complete the fields and click “Update Options”.That being said, if you do create a static front page then there will be no posts, no comments, no links in posts and no links in your blogroll displayed on it. Guess what Google primarily uses to determine your blog’s page rank?

Yes. Readers would much prefer a continuous theme throughout a site. Pick one you really like. Some themes provide different layouts based on page type, but the overall look is the same. For instance, the one I’m using shows the sidebar on Pages (including the main listing), but only shows an entry info box on the individual entry page. You just have to try each one out and see how your pages look. At any rate, only one theme for the whole blog (which is good). :-)

engtech has done some theme reviews that are really worth consulting. Although some new themes have been added the reviews are very comprehensive. Click the link above, scroll down to the screen shots and you are away.
P.S. The use of text widgets and customized headers also allow you to personalize a theme.

I do not agree with any of this. It could be disconcerting to go off at a tangent but page styling within a consistent framework can be very effective. As to how it is done. It needs the CSS upgrade. The problem AFAIK is that we do not seem to be able to put divs in things. Still a bit of hackery would extract the descendant selector that could be styled in CSS. An interesting question. Thanks.

@atthe404
From what you have said the inability to use div tags could be hacked around to extract the descendant selector and create different pages within the same theme, provided wwucomm purchases a css upgrade and undertakes that hacking him (or her) self.Although it’s possible that wwucomm has an extensive background in css modification, I’m assuming that like most wordpress.com bloggers that he or she does not.
As css customization is only recommended for bloggers who do have css customization experience, and as there is no staff support for learning css, and as staff will not correct blogger “borked” css I’m wondering how what you have posted above could be rendered in a way that’s helpful to wwucomm.

Well tt that is a good point. But sometimes I think if folk raise high end questions they (and the other folk who read the thread) are likely to receive a high end answer. You are quite right. It is easier said than done. *Descendant selector* is a basic CSS term. Folk not comfortable with it prolly should not be messing at all. :)
Sometimes I also think that the warning about a lack of support from *staff* for CSS sounds a bit draconian. If people aren’t encouraged they won’t try. If WP org had relied on support from *staff* (Matt) for CSS we never would have got started. And a completely trashed CSS can easily be rolled back to the original. I wonder if the assumption that WP com blogger equals zero web dev knowledge is always right. Just my 2c. :)

Suppose for a moment that you were wwucomm — what would you take away from this thread that you would find to be useful? What have you gained that would help you accomplish your goal, without acquiring any special skills?
In a nutshell that is my concern. I can remeber how confused I was when I first began blogging a year ago. And, I’m not convinced that wwucomm is any closer to achieving his or her goal than he or she was when he or she made their original post and asks this question. :(

Well suppose you were not wwucomm but you were one of the thousands of folk who lurk, and the many others who are encouraged to search the forum? The question the OP raises is can you style a cat or page? If you have the CSS upgrade my answer is yes. :)
