Difficult to leave comments

    comments
Hi I have had reports from my readers that it is difficult to leave a comment and also that the follow button doesn’t work. Are there ways that I can make these steps easier/more effective? Thanks, Meg

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Can you expand a bit further on what is difficult about leaving comments? Are people seeing an error message?

No error message, just that they have to have wordpress membership/registration and no many can be bothered to do this. I’ve had lots of people say. Is there a way around the membership requirement? Thank you.

  • just that they have to have wordpress membership/registration

I am not seeing that you have the “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” setting enabled on http://megoracle.wordpress.com/. So your users should not have to register or be logged in. You do have the “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail” setting enabled, so they would have to do that.

Could your readers be be confused into thinking that the “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail” requirement meant that they needed to register?

They definitely said they were required to register – three different readers said the same thing. But I’d like to remove the name and email setting anyway – how do I do that?

  • That is very strange.

I was able to leave a test comment on http://megoracle.com/2014/05/31/random-rhubarb/ while I was logged out of my WordPress.com account.

Could you do me a favor and log out of your WordPress.com account and see what happens if you try to leave a comment on your own blog?

After you’ve done that test comment I mention above, you can change the comment setting by logging into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard and going to Settings–> Discussion. Then unchecking the box next to “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail”. Don’t forget to scroll down and click “save” at the bottom.

I think what is happening – this happened when I logged out – is that if a reader is registered with wordpress but are leaving a comment on another wordpress account, they are asked to log in. But I have removed the email option thank you for those directions.

I also noticed that there is no actual “leave a comment” button at the bottom of the posts, only a “comments” link that says “leave a comment”if you hover over it. It’s a minor distinction but still, is there a speciaif “Leave a comment”widget or something? Sorry, clearly I’m a bit hopeless! M

Different themes style that area of the post page differently. It is possible, using the custom design upgrade, to modify your CSS and change how it is displayed for a given theme. But only you can decide if doing so is worth the trouble for your blog.
