Difficulties in setting up second blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been happily blogging a couple of years now on cinemusefilms.com, which is a film review site. I wanted to set up a second site called ebikerdiary, which is about ebike tours for seniors.
I’m having several weeks of frustration with the new site and am ready to abandon it. I cannot find a theme that works the way I want it regardless of whether its free or paid. My current theme of The Style is perfect, but I’m told you have retired it. There is no other theme like it and WordPress seems to offer fewer choices at present.
I would dearly like to purchase another The Style and use it for my new blog. Is there any way this is possible?
Also, there is an earlier attempt at setting up a blog at https://ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com When I went to delete it, a warning came up that the term ebikerdiary could not be used again if I deleted it. As it stands, it is causing confusion. Can you assist with these two issues please? The site I am working on is https://ebikerdiary.wordpress.com/
    cheers, Richard

    hi,

    1. purchase TheStyle theme
Are you referring to https://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/thestyle/ ?
It is still available for download.
As this is a custom theme not on WordPress. you need to sign up for the Business Plan to upload this theme to your site,

    Themes

    2. deleting ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com
If you go ahead and delete it, you will not be able to use ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com again.

It does not affect https://ebikerdiary.wordpress.com/ in any way.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Thank you for your reply kosiew; it is much appreciated.

I was not aware that The Style theme was only available under a Business Plan. Thank you for clearing that issue up.

Regarding the second point, this continues to cause confusion. I tried making ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private which has the effect of also making ebikerdiary.wordpress.com private.

That therefore suggests that if I delete ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com it will also delete ebikerdiary.wordpress.com.

They are not one and the same sites, but there appears to be a dangerous and confusing connection. Can you throw more light on this issue please?
    Richard

    hi,

Regarding the second point, this continues to cause confusion. I tried making ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private which has the effect of also making ebikerdiary.wordpress.com private.

This should not be the case.

    Can you try this:
    1. Verify that the settings for ebikerdiary.wordpress.com in https://wordpress.com/settings/general/ebikerdiary.wordpress.com is Public

    2. make ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private here:
    https://wordpress.com/settings/general/ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com ?

    3. Verify whether ebikerdiary.wordpress.com is still Public

  • Unknown's avatar

Re (1): I verified that this is Public

Re (2): I made this site Private

Re (3): I verify that this still remains Public

What does that tell you and what should I do?

Thank you so much for assisting.

    hi,

This means ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com is distinct from ebikerdiary.wordpress.com and deleting ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com will not delete ebikerdiary.wordpress.com.

    Your options:
    1. delete ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com
    2. make ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private and leave ebikerdiary.wordpress.com Public.

Again I thank you for your patient assistance.

The WP window warning about the effect of deleting ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com still comes up so I’ve made that site private and this does not seem to affect the site I’m trying to build.

Can I seek your advice on four other things please?

1 When on a post page there is a side menu listing the post titles. I cannot see a way of having this on the landing/home page. It is a useful feature as it works like a tour index. Is there a way to achieve this?

2 Is there a way to change the font colour on the side menu to black? The pale green is too low contrast.

3 Is there a way to remove the double arrow-heads in front of each menu item?

4 Is there a way to remove the large black border around the header image?

    thanks again, Richard

I was wrong in saying that I could make ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private without affecting the other site.

When I made it private, both sites became private (???) so I’ll need to swith both back on.

I’m so sorry; I’m going crazy.

I refreshed my browser and now the unwanted site is private and the wanted site is public. Thats OK.

There is definately a connection between the site I’m trying to delete and the site I am trying to build.

I thought I had https://ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com on private and the new site Public, but if the former is private so is the latter (and vice versa).

If I take steps to delete the unwanted site I am warned that ebiderdiary.wordpress.com can never be used again (which is the URL of the site I want to keep).

    Any suggestions?

I have tagged modlook for a Staff to help you with this.
They can review your settings and the relationship between the two sites.

    Summary for Staff:

…ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private which has the effect of also making ebikerdiary.wordpress.com private.

  • Hi there,

I made ebikerdiary875339758.wordpress.com private via wp-admin and it did not affect https://ebikerdiary.wordpress.com/.

Please check and see if you see the same on your end. Thanks!

Dont know how you made that work but I could not, but the site I do not want to use is now private and the active remains public.

    Thank you.

Can I ask for your help with these four issues please?

1 When you are on a post page there is a side menu listing the post titles.

Your current theme, Baskerville, does not show a sidebar on the front page, no, and there is no way to force it to do that. However, you can move that widget to the footer widget area instead if you want, as that widget area is visible on the front page as well.

However, if you want a widget to essentially use as an index, the Archive widget might serve you better than the Recent Posts widget you currently have – the Recent Posts widget will only show up to a certain number of posts, while the Archive widget will list the months in which you’ve published posts, and then someone can click a month to see all posts published in that time:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/

Or if you very specifically want the post titles listed, you can use the archive shortcode inside a text widget instead:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/

2 Is there a way to change the font colour on the side menu to black? The pale green is too low contrast.

That is only possible using the Custom Design features included in the Premium and Business Plans.

3 Is there a way to remove the double arrow-heads in front of each menu item?

That is a feature of your theme, but can be removed using custom CSS as part of the Premium or Business plans.

4 Is there a way to remove the large black border around the header image?

Do you mean the black bar at the bottom? I don’t see any border around the header image.

The black bar at the bottom is where the site menu is supposed to go, and also where the search box appears if you click the magnifying glass icon. It can only be removed with CSS.

The black bar at the top is the WordPress.com admin bar. That appears only to logged in users, and cannot be removed.
