Difficulty adding Users

I am creating a site for a class I am teaching this fall and asking students to complete the following steps to access my blog:

Welcome to the Computer/Study Skills Truth Academy class. Our class will be using a WordPress website where you will find all of the information you will need including assignments, textbook requirements, supplementary activities, resources and links. Each student must have their own account (linked to their e-mail address) and parents are invited to join as well with a different e-mail address. Parents may access the site through their student’s account if they do not want to create their own account.

    You will need to:
    • Decide if you want both a student and parent account.
    • Open and register a WordPress Account for each user
    • Select our class site and bookmark it
Here are detailed, step by step instructions to follow:
    1. Click the link https://en.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1
    2. Complete the form including creating a username and password. Enter your e-mail address and click “Sign up.”
    3. Activate your account by responding to the automatic e-mail you will receive.
    4. Log in to your account using the username and password you just created.
    5. Update your public profile. Fill in the line for first name, last name, and “display name publicly as” capitalizing the first letter in each as usual.
Students: Make sure your “Display Name Publicly as” is simply your first and last name with a space between your first and last name.
Parents: Please list your name as Mr. or Mrs. followed by your last name.
    6. Click “Update Profile.” You do not have to enter any of the information other than the information in Step #5 above.
    7. E-mail me with the account holder’s name, user name and e-mail address associated with that user name. I’m not sure, but at this point, I may have to activate your account from the administrator dashboard.
    8. Under “Blog” select “Dashboard” and then “Truth Computers” You will want to bookmark the home page of this site. http://truthcomputers.wordpress.com/
    9. Do some exploring so that you are familiar with the format of the website

I have students contacting me stating that they are still not able to access my site. I have tried adding their e-mail addresses under the “add user from the community function” and I get an error message stating that “the e-mail address does not belong to any user here.”. Also, the student does not show up on my list of “All Users.” What am I doing wrong in my directions to them?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We need more information from the students who are having difficulty: do they have difficulty signing up with a username? Are they getting an error message? does the confirmation email never arrive?

If you make them use their real name, anyone with a common name will have a problem, because that name will probably be taken.

If the confirmation email isn’t showing up, tell them to look in their spam folder; it often shows up there.

Adding users from the community only applies to people who have WP.com accounts. You can Invite them via email only.

I believe they are able to sign up for a user account and are not getting error messages. Does the confirmation e-mail require them to follow a link to complete their registration?

If they are not getting that e-mail and following the link, could that be why they are unable to access the website and I do not see them under “All Users.”

That’s right. The email goes to whatever email address you are using for them, obviously, but sometimes because it is automated, email programs flag it as spam. They’ll have to look for it in their Spam folder.
