Difficulty editing links

  • Unknown's avatar

When I try to edit the text displayed for a URL that is a link to another site that is on my wordpress page, I get punted now to the top of the page. I can proceed with editing in the pop up the text that is displayed in the link and click on ‘save’ … but then I am left at the top of the page and I must scroll down through the page to the exact location where I was working on edits. I have worked on WordPress for my site for over a year and today is the first time I have experienced this. It is very time consuming. I would like to reverse this so that when I finish working in the pop up to edit what is displayed in the URL for a link to another site, and click ‘save’ … that the wordpress software would leave my cursor where it was located, rather than me starting all over at the top of the page and having to srcoll down to find my place. Thanks. The site is SpringfieldLP.wordpress.com. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there, and that would definitely be frustrating. I’ve tried to reproduce this on my Mac in Safari, Chrome and Firefox, but haven’t been able to yet.

If you will, can you let us know the browser and version you are using and also which OS and version so that we can figure out what is going on?

Secondly, could you try from a different browser, if you can and see if that browser is doing the same thing?

And lastly, could you clear the browser cache and cookies on the browser it is happening in and then log in and see if you can edit a link without it misbehaving?

    Thanks for the response.

I am using Windows 10. My 32 year old nephew helped me with the “version” thing in the Google Chrome browser, and when I clicked on this, it updated a lot. The current version is 69.0.3497.92. But it went through 3 maybe 4 updates.

I was surprised at that because I am very careful in keeping Virus scans, Malware Bytes, etc updated and I clear the browser and cache frequently, like twice a week. I also use CC Cleaner religiously, if I am loading links then at the end of each session I just to keep everything cleared out.

But I never knew about the browser update thing I guess. My panel of younger advisors have never mentioned this.

After letting all that cycle through and restarting the computer (Twice …) I went to WordPress and the icons in the toolbar are gone. They display as empty boxes. I was able to pass the cursor over the empty boxes to figure out which box had the “add/update links” function, and I added a link, but it still pops me to the top of the page as soon as I click on “add links” and get the usual pop up box into which I paste my new link in the top bar …. and then in the bar below that one edit the link down so that only the main URL displays on my WordPress page.

Next I went to the “blue e” which I guess they are calling Microsoft Edge now. It used to be called Windows Explorer a few years ago I think. I opened the WordPress and then used “Bing” to find a link that I could add to one of the pages. Again as soon as I clicked to add a link, the pop up came up for me to paste in the new URL, and behind that the wordpress software punted me up to the top of the page I was on.

The good news is that in Microsoft Edge I can see the icons in the WordPress Toolbar, just like I always could.

So I am open to suggestions.

We have an update … I just went back into WordPress through the Google Chrome browser and the icons in the tool bar have come back. So that is good.

I can work around this by listing my new links I want to add at the top of the page, then cut and paste them as a block down where they belong in my template. So for instance, I am working on “Business Culture” in Taipei, Taiwan, so I will do my searches, cut and paste my links at the top of the Taipei page, then when I am finished with a dozen or so, I will “update” … then cut and past them down under Business into my section on Business Culture.

So if things don’t work out I can survive like this.

Once I get the links added I have had no additional complications when I go to vet the links to add in extra description of what they are. So it is only when I try to add new links that I have this problem.

Thanks again for your help and any new insight you might come up with.

  • Thanks for that, Sfsusu. Can you also confirm whether you’re using our editor at wordpress.com/post or the one in wp-admin? Perhaps that’ll help us duplicate the issue.

I’m experiencing the same problem, editing in WordPress within Firefox browser. Every time I add a link within a long complex article, I’m popped up to the top and have to scroll back down to the place I was editing. Huge loss of time and energy, because I may have several links per sentence.
Glad to hear that last year’s WordPress did not have this problem. Maybe some benevolent soul can fix the bug that was caused (perhaps by a new version of the WP editor?) and report back to us when it is fixed.

  • Hi folks,

This is a bug in the editor. In fact, it appears to be a recurrence of a bug that was fixed over a year ago.

We’ve already reported to our developers that it’s back, and they’re investigating. We’ll update here once we have more info.

Oh this is great news. Please let us know when this is repaired. We look forward towards the great day when it will be working again the way it used so. Regards
