Difficulty Exporting 325 Posts

    Hi, I changed my site to private and have been trying to export the 325 posts and pages that have been converted to Draft status. I need to convert the data to an MS Word document. When I export from the site, I receive xml files without the full content of my posts or pages. I am not sure what’s going on, I need assistance. Thank you!

    Hi there,

    When you export a WordPress site, what you get is an XML file, yes. That file is meant to be imported to another site/platform, and isn’t meant to be a human-readable version of your site.

    That file contains the full text content of your posts and pages, but it does not contain your media files. It only contains links to those files in the media library. If you were to import that file to another site, the importer on the other site would then transfer your media files directly during the import process, but that only works if the site you exported from is set to public at the time.

    If you want a human-readable download of your site, you’ll need to use a service like Fastpencil.com or Blogbooker.com to convert the XML file for you. Those services will let you convert your site into an ebook or a PDF format. If you specifically need Word, you’ll be able to open a PDF file in Word, and convert it to the Word file format from there.

    However, as with an import, make sure you set your site to public when you do this, else the media files won’t be included in the resulting file.

    Thank you for the assistance. I appreciate the referrals for what I ultimately need to do. The problem now is that my content is not there, specifically most of my posts (325) are missing text, only displaying titles and summaries. Only a few of them have feature images.

    I require my post content for all of the posts. It’s odd because the content for Pages is there. I never deleted any of my posts, although I changed the site to a Private site until I had time to work on it properly.

    Please help me find my missing text, maybe a previous backup data file? Thank you!

    Hi there,

    To clarify, you are importing your content into another WordPress site through a different provider? Or are you using a different platform (other than WordPress) and have imported your contents into that platform? Does that new site have a web address we can visit it at?

    I can confirm that the export file you created had all the contents of your site (pages and posts) though as @kokkieh has mentioned, it is in an XML file and not a human-readable format. I created an export file on our as well and confirmed that all contents were there as expected.
