Difficulty migrating images… Scope of Guided Transfer?

We have been trying to migrate to our own host for a while now, and are having serious problems. The problem is that the original domain of our site was mikeely.wordpress.com. We later mapped the domain name kasamaproject.org to this site, and that has worked out fine.

But the problem is all of our images and PDFs still have mikeely.wordpress.com URLs. And we need all of that content moved over.. So, I have a few questions:

    1. How can we get access to download all of the images and PDFs that we have uploaded to wordpress. There are thousands of them.

    2. Is there a way to set up 301 redirects for these files? A huge section of our traffic comes from google image searches.. any way to preserve that?

    3. Would purchasing a guided transfer resolve this problem?

    Thanks so much!

You can use the site redirect here and it will do 301 permanent redirects on all mikeely.wordpress.com URLs, including anything uploaded to the media library. A year is probably all you would have to pay for on that since by then all the search engines should have caught up and updated all the links to media files.

“Thousands” of media files are probably going to be an issue unless you use the guided transfer. Staff can actually move those files over to a web host by FTP if necessary where you cannot.

Basically when they are done with the transfer and hand you the keys, everything is moved over, tested and working properly. Given what you have to move over, the guided transfer is probably your only bet unless you want tons and tons of work in manually moving all the media files over.

Excellent. Would the guided transfer also a mass find replace of all the old URLs in the database? or is that something I need to do myself?

No, when staff turn it over to you, all the internal links will be fixed and pointing at the proper URL on the new site.
