Directing a Word Press Theme to a Domain

  I have a friend who has a site in frontpage (she already has a domain). I am trying to convince her to convert it over to wordpress. How does she do this. I understand easiest way copying and pasting, into a new wordpress theme but does it have to be a paid theme or can you use an free theme (and change that theme ie header etc) and then direct that theme to her domain. Sorry am new to WordPress so sorry if it is a silly question.
