My web site that I am trying to build will be a directory with Categories and listings. How do I go about imprting my list of categories, xlients and their information such as address city state name of company and all the information that I have on them. Most fields will be searchable in some way.

How and what do I do?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey @thecommunicatorgroup,

I would be glad to help you with this, it does appear that your domain is not set up yet though. Do you mind letting us know what the WordPress.com URL you are working on is? As for this list you are trying to import what format is it in?

With just the basic WordPress.COM site, the functionality to create a directory listing does not exist. You could potentially set each listing as its own post and create categories to link to them. Then you would be able to use the Display Posts Shortcode to display your desired listings on those pages. However you will not be able to import your listings to posts directly. You would need to manually create this.

I hope this helps, I look forward to your response : )

    Cheers!

My web site is under construction.

My information is in an excel spreadsheet. CSV. Is this format okay?
You mention that with basic WP it is not available.
You were not clear as to how it would be available.

What would I upgrade to and what is the cost of upgrading?

  • @thecommunicatorgroup,

Ahh that makes senses why your site wasn’t showing up. The reason I was asking was to make sure you were looking for help in the right area : ). This support area is specifically for WordPress.COM, your options will vary depending on which you are using. Here is the difference between the 2, it can be a little confusing.

If you do have a WordPress.com then the 2 options you have would be either following the steps I outlined previously, or downloading a plugin which is only possible with a Business plan. There are a few plugins that you could add to your site to give it the desired functions. As for uploading the CSV you would only be able to upload an XML file, unless you had the Business plan and downloaded a plugin that added that ability to your site.

If you have a self-hosted WordPress.ORG site then you should be able to download a plugin as-is. If you aren’t able to find a plugin you like then you get a web designer to help you integrate this into your site by building a custom plugin. There are more options here but I am not aware of all of them exactly you would need to get those answers from WordPress.ORG support.

As you can see there are a lot of choices and it all hinges on if you have WordPress.COM or WordPress.ORG site. Here are some resources to WordPress.ORG incase that is what you have and would like help setting any of the above mentioned things up.

    https://wordpress.org/support/
    https://codex.wordpress.org/

Hopefully this clears up some of the questions you had. Let me know if you have any more.

    Thanks,

    Tony
