  I want to use wordpress as a directory. Users can for example register, and it must create a PROFILE for them, which must then be accesible via http://www.mydomain.com/username. On the front-end, users must be able to search through these profiles using keywords. For example, if I want to see all users living in a town called “MyTown”, it must be able to do this…

  Is there a plugin that can do this? Or is it a bad idea using wordpress for this?

  That cannot be done here at wordpress.com, but you might check over at http://wordpress.org/support/ , and see if anyone knows of a plugin that you could use on a self-hosted install of the wordpress.org software.
